World-renowned photographer Michael Childers’ work will be the subject of a special exhibition at the Rancho Mirage Public Library titled AUTHOR, AUTHOR, featuring over 40 intimate and original portraits of writers, screenwriters and playwrights taken from the 1960s through today. The show will launch with a special artist’s reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. Childers is known for his fine art photographs of legendary movie stars, artists and other iconic luminaries. What makes AUTHOR, AUTHOR so rare, is the fact that writers typically become known for their work and not themselves. The literary star tends to let the written prose speak for itself, while the writer stays rather anonymous in light of the lens. Childers has managed to cultivate a seminal collection of portraits of the likes of Ray Bradbury and Tennessee Williams to contemporary writers like Jackie Collins, Michael Cunningham and Christopher Rice, exposing the enigmatic personae of those who have contributed greatly to our annals of great books. For more information call KIMBERLY NICHOLS at 760-464-6000 or via email knr@dc.rr.com.

14 DESERT ART•SCENE
The contemporary art scene in the desert has flourished like wild fire over the past year. This season boasts high profile shows, multifaceted exhibition programs that run from the whimsical to the academic, and new works from old familiar faces. A gallery known for its figurative slant, Christian Hohmann Fine Art, will celebrate its first year anniversary with a high profile show of German artist Gunther Sachs in April 2011 alongside a new stable of artists picked up in Europe over the summer. Desert Art Source spent the Summer renovating their entire gallery at the Art Place and refreshing their inventory of nearly 50 artists. New works now abound across diverse genres including realist painting, contemporary abstraction, traditional landscapes,
photography, and sculpture. Blue-chip Imago Gallery will present a look at realism in December through the quirky group selection of artists such as Robert Graham, John De Andrea and Mel Ramos. In celebration of their 20th year in the desert, they will showcase some of their greats like William Wegman, Ed Moses and Dale Chihuly as well. Michael H. Lord Gallery will introduce video art to the desert audience in January with a large-scale Robert Drummond installation. Desert resident and sculptor Christopher Georgesco, who’s been called the father of “new modernism”, will present three-dimensional beauties in conjunction with Modernism Week in February. Royale Projects continues its serious program of modern and contemporary art with a special exhibition of local architect Phillip K. Smith’s works in conjunction with his installation “Aperture” that recently debuted at the Palm Springs Art Museum. Also highlighted is a show about renderings and how drawing informs work by artists such as Dennis Oppenheim and Tony Delap. CODA Gallery will bring in artist Ben Steele with his ironic paintings of everyday icons and objects as well as familiar faces like David Dornan. richard danskin Galleries has since 1968 has featured the finest artists. This year we welcome and present from France Michel Degav, from Canada Hubert Nanzer, and American artists Sue Averell, Andrew Velez and Gregory Sievers. Long time artists return with new works: Rob MacIntosh’s new “Route 66” paintings and Don Langford with a new series of paintings. A big welcome to two new galleries to the “Gallery Scene” in the valley - Classic Art Gallery on El Paseo in Palm desert and LIK Rancho Gallery at the River in Rancho Mirage.
