ARE COLORED DIAMONDS REAL?

Colored diamonds have suddenly become very popular. There is controversy over whether they are “real” diamonds, so let’s figure it out.

Diamonds are formed deep in the Earth when high pressure and high temperatures combine to crystalize Igneous Rocks. They are then brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions which is why you probably won’t find diamonds in the rocks in your back yard unless you are near a volcano. They also can be formed in places where large asteroids have hit the Earth.

Colored diamonds have traces of minerals and other elements in them that provide the color. In most cases, the color is very light. Naturally bright colored diamonds are very rare and expensive. In order to bring out brighter colors in the diamonds, they can be treated with high heat, and pressure. No two colored diamonds are exactly alike.

Many contain more than one color, so just like a box of crayons you can get colors like blue green or red orange. Just as regular “white” diamonds are graded for color, colored diamonds have many grades of color intensity that affect their price and quality.

Black diamonds are only found in the Central African Republic and Brazil. They are more porous and harder to cut.

They contain traces of graphite. Pure black stones are very rare naturally, so most of them are formed by applying high heat to stones that contain graphite. Many years ago black diamonds were used for industrial tools but there is now an increased demand for them and very large ones can be fairly expensive.
