INTRODUCTION

The aquaculture industry in Nigeria has grown tremendously in the past nine years with a

reported production of farmed catfish of 143,207 MT (Federal Dept. of Fisheries, 2008) and

some 20% growth per year. This development has catalysed a well developed value chain of

many participants including an estimated 5,000 or more fish farmers, some 15 large fish

hatcheries and more than 100 small to medium hatcheries as well as four quality fish feeds of

local manufacture, some 12 imported quality fish feeds and an undocumented large number

of small, artisanal fish feed producers. Equipment suppliers and consulting service providers

have grown with fairly wide coverage in the different regions of the country, although most

suppliers are focused in the SW, where the aquaculture industry began.

With many fish farmers entering the field every year, it follows that many will be seeking

sources of supply of all kinds of inputs, equipment and services without previous experience

of where to find them. Similarly, as the demand for such inputs, equipment and services

grows, many new suppliers are starting in business without an established clientele. This

Buyers’ Guide seeks to bridge the gap between the potential customers and the purveyors of

those inputs, equipment and services necessary for aquaculture.

The Buyers’ Guide provides extensive lists of the merchants and consultants who supply

fingerlings, fish feeds, all kinds of aquaculture equipment, equipment and tools for pond

construction, technical services and fish disease diagnostics. It also provides guidance on the

importance of these inputs and what to look for when seeking a supply.

This first edition of the Aquaculture Buyers’ Guide is the result of cooperation between

USAID MARKETS and staff of the Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON). It is anticipated

that this buyers’ guide will be revised and kept up-to-date, and may be produced and

marketed by FISON.

Note that an inventory of Fish Farms, Feed Producers and Lakes was completed in 2003 by

the Aquaculture and Inland Fisheries Project of the Special Food Security Programme

assisted by FAO. This inventory is summarized in Table 1.

Survey Area

Commercial fish farming began in States in South-western Nigeria, especially Lagos, Ogun

and Oyo. Contacts with suppliers was extensive in this area and other regions canvassed

include the North-central area with the FCT, Kaduna, and Benue States. South-eastern states

included Enugu and Anambra, while South-south states included Benin, Delta, Edo and

Rivers States. These regions and states include the major concentrations of fish farmers and

suppliers. It was not possible to cover all states in the country in this edition.

5

DISCLAIMER

This first edition of the Aquaculture Buyers’ Guide in no way claims to include all suppliers

and service providers to the Aquaculture industry in Nigeria. Concentrated efforts have been

made to reach as many participants in the value chain as possible. Vetting of suppliers has

been done through fish farmers and others in the value chain and regular review by local

professional associations is proposed for updating this document in the future.

All suppliers listed are known to have supplied inputs or equipment or to have offered to

supply such inputs. USAID and USAID MARKETS does not support or back the claims

made by suppliers and service providers nor does it verify the claims of suppliers as regards

the quality or uses of their equipment.

The compilers of this Aquaculture Buyers’ Guide advance the word, “Buyer Beware” and

encourage all buyers to fully investigate the supplier and their inputs, equipment and services

before making their purchases. Particular caution is urged for those seeking qualified

consultants and references should be contacted for verification of technical qualifications and

integrity. It is up to the client to be vigilant.

6

1. How to Use this Buyers’ Guide

This buyers’ guide is straightforward to use. Those seeking to purchase things for their fish

farms can:

1) simply flip through the Buyers’ Guide to find a topic,

2) look up a given item in the Table of Contents,

3) refer to the list of suppliers and contact numbers and e-mail addresses at the end

of the Guide,

4) use the Guide on the interactive internet web site: www.fison.org

Some technical information is provided on each subject. Note that an evaluation on the use

of the Guide is available to receive user comments. This feature is also available to evaluate

the suppliers, and users of the Guide are encouraged to respond in an effort to improve the

Guide and to encourage the suppliers to be more responsive to the needs of fish farming

consumers. This Aquaculture Buyers’ Guide will be widely distributed in a “hard published

copy” and on the internet: www.fison.org.

Since aquaculture has developed rapidly in Nigeria, technical approaches and use of technical

equipment such as water quality test equipment, have not always kept up with the pace. This

is shown in the limited number of equipment suppliers in Nigeria. Efforts at compiling this

first Aquaculture Buyers’ Guide covered eleven states in the South-west (Lagos, Ogun and

Oyo), South-south (Edo, Delta, Rivers), South-east (Anambra and Enugu) and North-central

(FCT, Kaduna and Benue). All suppliers could not be contacted, but this first edition of the

Buyers’ Guide includes the major suppliers. Detailed contact information on some 30

fingerling suppliers are listed in Table 2, while more than fifty suppliers of fish feeds are

presented in Table 3. Equipment suppliers are listed in Table 4. The list of Service Providers

of Technical Assistance through consultants was provided by FISON and is presented in

Table 5.

7

2. Suppliers of Fish Fingerlings

How does one obtain quality fish fingerlings to stock ponds or tanks? High quality fish

fingerlings are essential to good fish production. Most good fish hatcheries are involved in

breeding improvement programmes and obtain brood stock from known sources, such as the

Dutch varieties of catfish, which are well known for their rapid growth and efficient feed

conversions. Some hatcheries may be linked with international programmes. Most of the

major suppliers of fingerlings from all geographic regions in the country are listed in this

Guide. Efforts were made to include those employing best management practices at their

hatcheries. Farmers are advised to avoid suppliers

who may be selling fingerlings that were caught in

the wild, as the species of such fish may be unknown

and their growth and feed conversions will probably

be unprofitable.

2.1 Catfish fingerlings

The African Catfish, Clarias gariepinus, is the fish

most in demand and is the species of choice at most

fish farms and hatcheries. This carnivorous species

is extremely hardy. In intensive culture systems,

densities of fish of up to 50 fish/m2 are common, and

such high densities are often accompanied by low

oxygen and high levels of organic suspended solids.

The African Catfish is able to tolerate such stress. Catfish prefer to feed competitively in

darkened conditions and, given good quality fish feeds, can achieve exceptional growth: up to

1.4 kg in 4-5 months. Catfish larvae are initially fed with artemia or other zooplankton as a

natural feed, then weaned off this to high quality, composed rations with the smallest particle

sizes. Feeding the right size pellets to different size fish is critical and is presented on page

11. Feed suppliers should provide feeding charts for each species and size of fish. Without

the proper feeds, many fish hatchery operators experience high mortalities at the fry and

larval stages of growth.

Some 30 Suppliers of Fingerlings

are presented in Annex 2.

Clarias catfish juveniles. These are best for

stocking as they are very hardy and resistant.

2.2 Tilapia fingerlings

Catfish is the fish in most demand, but the demand for tilapias is growing. Demand for other

fish species is negligible.

2.3

2.3 Other species

Red Tilapia at Durante Hatchery in

Ibadan. Oreochromis niloticus. The common tilapia.

Common Carp, Cyprinous carpio

including the Mirror Variety. These are

now difficult to find but favour cool

temperatures as in Jos where several

fish farms have them in stock.

Heterotis

niloticus is a

species

favoured by

some but

fingerlings

are difficult

to find.

Ellah Lakes

in Rivers

State may

have them.

9

2.4 Live Fish Transport providers

There are unfortunately no modern live fish

transporters available in Nigeria, although several

large producers have this capacity. Most live fish

transport in Nigeria is done using the old plastic 25

litre “jerry cans” without using oxygen or diffusers

or air stones. This is very stressful to the fish and is

the cause of high mortalities in many movements of

fish. Most fish farmers may not even be aware of

high mortalities following transport as many dead

fish may not float or are eaten by birds or other

animals. There is great need for improved live fish

transport in Nigeria and it is a prime service area for

a professional to occupy. Most large fish farms have

some means to transport fish live with oxygen as

shown in the photo.

Live fish transport in Uganda. Note the use of

oxygen bottle connected to a diffuser in the

transport tank. All efforts should be made to

handle and transport fish in water.

Plastic 25 litre Jerry Cans

Fish should not be transported in such

containers. Modern fish transport as

pictured in transport boxes or plastic

bags, offers very high survival rates and

much less stress on fish.

Live Fish Transport in Plastic Bags with Oxygen

Small fish can be transported in doubled plastic bags

with one-third water and two-thirds oxygen. Bags

should be laid on their sides to maximize the oxygen -

water interface. All fish for transport should be

conditioned and held in tanks for up to two days

without feed prior to transport.

10

2.5 Fish Disease Diagnostic Services

Few fish diseases have been reported as causing major problems in Nigeria. However,

aquaculture systems are intensifying, increasing the likelihood of disease outbreaks, and there

is clear need to have Fish Disease Diagnostic Services. All fish farmers should take heed

from the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Several universities and institutes offer diagnostic services, as shown in Table 5. Diseased

fish require external and internal analysis and only live fish can be used for diagnostic

purposes. When fish are diseased, they usually show signs of stress before deaths occur. Fish

may go off feed, or not feed aggressively; they may crowd themselves in a corner of a pond

or tank, or manifest impaired swimming. The observant fish farmer will note the behaviour

of his fish and must take action urgently as soon as he observes any abnormalities. Fish

health is often linked to deterioration in water quality which stresses fish. Live fish for

diagnosis should always be handled in water and be shipped or taken to a diagnostic

laboratory for analysis. The following services are available and contacts are provided in

Table 6.

11

3. Suppliers of Fish Feeds

Fish feeds represent 60-70% of the total expenses of a fish farmer. The best farmers use only

the best feeds available, and by doing so, make more profit, despite their higher cost. Such

feeds offer farmers fast growth and low feed conversion ratios. (A low feed conversion ratio

is desirable, not a high one. See below for an explanation.) Data from Uganda show that, by

using the best fish fingerlings and fish feeds available, survival rates of 85-90% are possible,

compared with survival rates of 40-60% using feeds made “on-farm”. The quality of feed

affects water quality, which in turn affects fish health. The best feeds are water stable and are

efficiently utilized by fish, so that the accumulation of waste in the pond or tank, and thus the

impact on water quality, is minimised. In contrast, poor quality feeds often start

disintegrating on contact with water and are not well assimilated by fish, or may not even be

consumed. This results in high waste accumulation and poor water quality. The findings in

Uganda should caution all fish farmers to only use the best feeds available.

Fish feeds available in Nigeria fall into three categories:

1. Locally Manufactured High Quality Fish Feeds

2. Local Artisanal Fish Feeds made by small-scale feed millers or made “on-farm” by fish

farmers.

3. Imported Fish Feeds

The key index for managing feeding regimes is the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR). The FCR

is defined as the number of kilograms of feed required to produce one kilogram of fish. Thus,

the more efficient the feeding regime, the lower the FCR.

It is essential to keep records to make the best use of feeds. This is not done well on most fish

farms in Nigeria. All fish farmers should keep comprehensive records of their operations,

farm activities expenses and sales, and they are encouraged to start keeping them now if they

do not already do so. It is only through such records that a farmer can really know if the feed

being used is giving a low FCR. A good FCR could range from 1.0:1 to 1.5:1, i.e., from 1.0

to 1.5 kg of feed is needed to produce 1 kg of fish gain. Some of the artisanal feeds made

“on-farm” give FCRs of 2:1 to 4:1 or higher and cost the farmer much more than he realizes.

Only when he/she knows the FCR, can the farmer know if he/she is making profit. Table 3

gives a list of feed suppliers. 58 feed suppliers are listed and many more exist in Nigeria.

3.1 Locally Manufactured High Quality Fish Feeds

In Nigeria, local fish feed manufacture on an industrial scale is dominated at present by four

producers: CHI, Grand Cereals for Vital Feeds, Tempo Feed Mill for Freshline Feeds and

Durante. Their bags are shown in the photos below. The first three feeds are floating

pelleted feeds, while Durante produces a high quality sinking pelleted fish feed. All of these

fish feeds are available in several pellet sizes such as 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm. Please refer to

the list of Feed Suppliers in Table 3. in the Annex for contact details.

12

3.2 Imported Fish Feeds

There are about one dozen fish feeds imported

from abroad into Nigeria. These are all high

quality floating feeds in general. Note most quality

fish feeds come in several pellet sizes as they are

tailored to feed different sizes of fish. Small fish

require high protein (50% CP) and tiny pellets.

Coppens is the oldest, most established imported

fish feed in the country and has the following

pellet sizes available for different size fish as

shown in the photo to the right: 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm,

0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm,

4.5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm. Most imported fish feeds

only include the larger size pellets. The smaller

size pellets are very expensive, but the high quality

of these feeds jump-starts the young larvae and fry

into fast growth. Many fish farmers start feeding

the small size pelleted feeds during the first 4-8

weeks of growth, then switch to the lower cost

feeds. All contact details are presented in Table 3 with the list of feed suppliers.

Here is a selection of imported fish feeds including fish meal, the most expensive

ingredient in poultry and fish feeds. Artemia is also included for feeding larvae and

fry.

13

Artemia is a natural type of zooplankton, which

is shipped in cans. The encapsulated cysts are

hatched and the live artemia are put in the tank

and preyed upon by the young larvae and fry.

Once hatched, the artemia should be siphoned

out of their tank before feeding them to the

larvae, or fry, so as to separate them from the

cyst’s shells. A second variety is decapsulated

and also serves as food.

14

3.3 Locally produced artisanal fish feeds

There are many locally produced, artisanal small-scale feed millers producing some fish

feeds as well as many fish farmers who produce their own fish feeds on the farm. Most of

these feeds are only available in the areas where they are produced. Common suppliers of

artisanal, small-scale feed millers’ feeds include: MOSAB, Ideal Fish Feeds, Aqua Visa

Feeds, Megatimex, UNIFACO, Aqua Plus, High Yield, Jib Feeds, Darrell Feeds, etc.

Examples are shown below. A list of suppliers of such feeds is presented in Table 3.

15

4. Suppliers of Aquaculture Equipment

Much of the equipment for use in fish farming can be made locally and fish farmers have

proven themselves to be very resourceful in this regard. For example many farmers make

scoop nets and other gear for use on their farms. With the development of the industry, there

are a number of providers of both locally-made, and imported, equipment.

4.1 Hatchery Equipment

Dip nets come in a variety of

sizes. The best ones have

the netting mounted behind

a protective bar or rubber

shield so the netting will not

scrape the bottom of the

tank and wear when dipping

fish. Many of the scoop nets

used on farms are made by

the farmers themselves.

Scales and Balances

Find the right one for the job. Battery

and electrically operated digital

platform scales are very good and

some are very portable for work in the

field and provide more accuracy than

the suspended scales.

Suppliers:

• Kingdom Aquarium

• Capsfeed

• Durante Fish Industries

• Sabina Pad

16

Air Pumps and Selected Gear

Selection of air pumps, blowers, air stones and tubing should be done carefully in

order to select the most reliable equipment. The better brands of this equipment

can last several years, if properly installed and regular maintenance is carried out.

Use of blowers can sometimes double fish production in intensively managed

farms. Such equipment reduces stress on fish and enhances growth. However, one

must consider the cost of energy.

Suppliers:

• Kingdom Aquarium

• Durante Fish Industries

• Felimar Aquaculture

17

Assorted Hatchery Equipment and Hormones

All hatcheries which ship fish fingerlings in plastic bags require oxygen. Bottles for oxygen require a

regulator valve to decrease the pressure. Such bottles are used to ship live small fish in plastic bags as

well as for live transport in live fish transport tanks. Air stones or diffusers are needed for use in

transport tanks.

Submerged pumps may be found in a variety of sizes as can UV sterilizing filters for treatment of water

in aquaculture systems.

Portable plastic/PVC tanks are very useful in handling and sorting fish as are mesh netting or hapa

cages.

Hormones are needed for induced spawning of catfish and several types are available on the market.

Suppliers:

• Kingdom Aquarium

• Felimar Aquaculture

• Durante Fish Industries

18

Plastic Bio Filters are made in Nigeria and are

used in recirculating aquaculture systems. Fish Sorting Table shown with several types of

plastic tubs and containers which are very

useful in fish farming.

Graders are used to separate the faster

growing catfish from the others. This is done

to achieve homogeneity in sizes of fish at

stocking. The faster growing fish are called

“shooters” or “jumpers” and can cannibalize

the smaller fish.

Hapas are fine mesh net cages for sorting,

holding and rearing small fish in a protected

environment away from predators (including

insects). Different netting materials are

available to make hapas.

Electric Paddle wheels serve

to aerate and move water in

ponds. These can help

prevent pond water from

stratifying. Waders may be

useful in seining ponds.

Assorted Fish Hatchery Equipment Bio Filters can be made from a variety of

materials. Bio Filters have a huge surface

area per volume to provide substrate for

bacteria that remove ammonia and clean

up water continuously. These are used in

the many recirculating aquaculture

systems found in Nigeria.

Fish sorting tables are used to quickly sort

and count fish for stocking or for sale.

Hapas are very useful as temporary units

to hold fish, enabling a number of sizes or

species of fish to be held in one pond.

They are also used in reproducing tilapias

with the intensive Philippine method.

Feed Production Equipment

Several suppliers provide small-scale and large-scale feed milling equipment for

limited fish feed production. Most such operations require a generator, or, as an

alternative, it is possible to purchase solar energy panels in Nigeria.

Suppliers:

• Capsfeed

• Kingdom Aquarium

• Ajanla Farms – CHI Fish Feeds

4.3 Water Quality Monitoring

Water Quality Monitoring Equipment

Water quality test equipment is lacking at most fish

farms in Nigeria and without demand for such

equipment, the suppliers only have minimal items

available. Serious fish farmers should have a basic

water quality test kit capable of measuring

parameters such as pH, oxygen, hardness, ammonia

and others. Several such combined kits are available

on the international market. Fish farmers who

manage their ponds and tanks intensively should

have a quality, battery operated oxygen meter.

4.4 Pond Treatments

Fertilizers, lime, salt, potassium permanganate and other items that could be used in treating

ponds, tanks or fish are available on the local market at many agricultural suppliers.

Fertilizers, agricultural lime and other

inorganic fertilizers are available all

over Nigeria from many suppliers.

Agricultural lime is slower acting,

cheaper, and safer to use than hydrated

lime.

22

4.5 Sampling and Harvest Nets

Nets and such fishing gear are widely available across Nigeria.

Fish Netting and other Gear

There are many suppliers of fish netting, floats, leads, line and

gear to be used in making seines, dip nets and other needs for

pond work.

Leads are needed

to make lead lines

for seines, pictured

above, and other

fishing nets. The

yellow net needles ,
