The clinical section of this society will meet at the MiddlesexHospital on Friday, April 10, at 2.15 r.M. On April 11,at 11.15 A.M., the section of orthopaedics is holding a meetingat St. Nicholas’s Orthopaedic Hospital, Pyrford, Surrey. The

following papers will be read : Mr. George Perkins, practicalpoints in connexion with amputations ; Mr. R. H. Young,prophylaxis and treatment of knee stiffness following fractureof the femur; Colonel W. Rowley Bristow, treatment offractures and joint injuries in the present war; Mr. B. H.Burns, use of internal splints ; and Mr. Ronald Furlong, useof the Roger Anderson apparatus.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical MedicineDuring the war detailed accounts of the work of this school

will not be issued, but the report for 1940-41 by the actingdean, Lt.-Col. G. S. Parkinson, summarises succinctly theactivities of the various departments, and it seems that someat least of what has been lost on the swings has been madeup on the, roundabouts. Members of the staff have beenseconded forwar service, equipment has been transferred tothe Emergency Public Health Service, some rooms have beendamaged by enemy action ; but the headquarters staff ofthe MRC, some of the laboratory staff of the Ministry ofHealth, several departments of the University of London,and members of the staff of the Rockefeller Foundation havebeen stimulating guests. The Seamen’s Hospital Societystill holds two outpatient sessions a week at the school, andan ARP wardens post, is housed in the basement. The librarycontinues to have many readers and the staff have answeredmany bibliographical questions especially about nutritionand bacteriology. There are now over 28,000 bound volumeson its shelves but the discontinuance of periodicals fromenemy and enemy-occupied countries has reduced thenumber of current journals from 430 to 245.

London Jewish Hospital Medical Society’ A meeting of this society will take place at 2.30 P.M. on

Thursday, April 16, at BMA House, Tavistock Square, W.C.I.Dr. Maurice Marcus will read a paper on the psychology of

l the doctor, Dr. A. Herzberg on short treatment of neurosesand Dr. J. Loewenstein on the application of a coitus-training

apparatus in the psychological treatment of impotence.

Nutrition Society in Scotland’

. The Scottish group of the Nutrition Society at its firstscientific meeting held at Perth on March 14, under thechairmanship of Dr. Andrew Davidson, chief medical officerof the Department of Health for Scotland, considered the foodrequirements necessary for health and the evaluation ofstandards. In the opening paper Sir John Orr pointed outthat the consumption of different factors in diet varied withpurchasing power and that the diet of the poorest classses ofthe people was deficient in the relatively expensive protectivefoods. In recent years there had been an improvement inthe diet of this country, particularly of the poorest third of the -population, but there was still urgent need for a great increasein the production and consumption of protective foods,especially milk. Dr. D. P. Cuthbertson discussed standardsfor proximate principles, Mr. J. Duckworth, D.Sc., standardsfor minerals, and Surgeon Lieut.-Commander 0. C. Ungleystandards for vitamins. In the second and third scientific

meetings of the group there will be discussions on requirementsin terms of food and on signs and symptoms of dietarydeficiencies. ’

Dr. ASTLEY CLARKE has been appointed Sheriff of Rutland.GLAXO LABORATORIES inform us that as the Ministry of

Food has called for a reduction in the use of vitamin A for

pharmao .tical and medical preparations, the potencyof AfLxolin ’ capsules has been changed. Thesec apsulesnow contain 4500 I.U. instead of 6000 I.U. of vitamin A and900 I.U. of vitamin D.

The fact that goods made of raw materials in shortsupply owing to war conditions are advertised in thispaper should not be taken as an indication that they arenecessarily available for export.
