AP Biology Discussion Notes

Monday 3/23/2015

Goals for the day

• Be able to predict patterns of inheritance and interpret pedigrees.

• Be able to use probabilities to predict the likelihood of different outcomes

Question of the day 3/23/14

What steps would you take to figure out what kind of trait is represented by a pedigree?

Steps in interpreting a pedigree

– Determine if trait is dominant or recessive and use specific individuals to explain your answer.

– Next decide if a trait is Autosomal or sex-linked• Ask yourself the questions, and if that doesn’t help

start writing out genotypes and see if you encounter any problems.

– Fill in Genotypes for all individuals (leaving “?” where you cannot be 100% certain)

Science Fair Judging?

• Oscar Howe Elementary• K-5 kids• March 24th – (Tuesday -TOMORROW)

– 6:15 to 7:30pm• Have a check sheet (scale of 1-5) talk to each

child for ~2 minutes (in pairs)• Need about 10 judges• Volunteer hours – will provide letter if

requested.

Pedigree & Probability Practice

1. If I-2 is a heterozygote for this autosomal trait, what is the probability that she would pass on the recessive allele, “a”, to her children?

2. If I-3 is a heterozygote, a fact we can’t be sure of, what was the probability of him giving the “A” allele to ALL 3 of his children?

A. Write this question out in words (using AND /OR) then show your work to solve the problem.

3. What is the probability that III-6 AND III-8 are both homozygous dominant?

4. What is the probability that III-6 AND III-8 are both heterozygous?

5. Are the probability in #3 and #4 the same? Why or why not?

6. What is the probability that either III-6 or III-8 is a heterozygote?

Wait. Is that right?

Work Order1. Pedigree & Probabilities

– Determine if trait is dominant or recessive and use specific individuals to explain your answer.

– Next decide if a trait is Autosomal or sex-linked• Ask yourself the questions, and if that doesn’t help start writing

out genotypes and see if you encounter any problems.

– Fill in Genotypes for all individuals (leaving “?” where you cannot be 100% certain)

2. Check Pedigree sheet & explanations 3. Bring up book & character map (if you didn’t Friday)4. Check Problem set 1 (Key online)5. Sex-linked trait practice problem

– Check with Ms. Jacobs
