Wonder Woman: Mrs. Evans By Paige E. & Anna G. 5
th
We’re Paige and Anna, and we had the pleasure of interviewing Mrs. Evans. The first ques-tion that we asked her was… What is your fa-vorite color? And her answer was (purple). The next question was… would you rather wear your hair in locks or natural? And her answer was (locks are natural). The next question that we asked her was… Why did you want to be a teacher? And her answer was (to help children learn in a safe and loving environment). Then we asked Mrs. Ev-ans… what did you want to be when you were a child? And her answer was (a pe-diatrician). The next question was… what’s your favorite season? And she an-swered (summer). The next question that we asked her was… what was your favor-ite subject in school? And her answer was (math). Then we asked her did you ever go to a private school? And she answered (yes in 1st and 2nd grade and then again in 5th grade but to a different one). The next question that we asked her was… who was your favorite teacher? And her an-swer was (Mrs. Castello in 2nd grade and Mrs. Stenenson who taught trigonometry in high school). Then we asked her… how long have you taught at Canterbury? And her answer was (3 years). The next question that we asked was… what year did you start teaching in? And she an-swered (1997). The next question was… what’s your favorite restaurant? And her answer was (I don’t have one I just like food!). Then the last question that we asked Mrs. Evans was… how many sib-lings do you have? And her answer was (3, I am the only girl!). We had a lot of fun interviewing Mrs. Evans and we hope all of you a happy SUMMER!!!
Mini Med School by DJ B. 6th
What do you want to be when you
grow up? We’ve all heard that ques-
tion before. Since the age of five, I
have always known that I want to
be a doctor, and after watching a
medical show one day, I became
interested in becoming a cardiolo-
gist. Several weeks ago, I attended
Black Men in White Coats Summit. I
also had a chance to go to a mini medical school where I learned
about different medical instruments that medical students use while
in medical school and as physicians. Dr. Dale Okorodudu, founder of
BMWC, read an alarming report informing the nation that the already
low number of black men applicants to medical school was decreas-
ing! During the summit, Dr. Dale said if you want to be a doctor, there
are some key things you must do to get there. The most important
thing I learned is that you must G.R.I.N.D. to get there. G-set goals, R-
have a reason or purpose, I-research information about the medical
field, N-network with peers, mentors and sponsors in the field, D-have
discipline. Dr. Dale wrote How to Raise a Doctor; which is not about
raising a doctor but how to raise a leader. The summit was a day
filled with opportunities for young black men like me to interact with
medical students and practicing physicians. I learned about various
types of doctors and how they started in medicine. Three different
doctors shared what they do. I learned about a psychiatrist, an otolar-
yngologist, and an orthopedic. Each doctor shared their experience
and how rewarding it is to be able to help and treat people. Overall, I
enjoyed my experience at the summit. I met medical students, doc-
tors and kids who want to be a doctor just like I do. I know what it
takes, and I am ready to G.R.I.N.D to get there.
NBA Playoffs Have Begun! By Cayden S. 5th This month the NBA playoffs had
begun. In the west, we had Nug-
gets vs. Spurs, Jazz vs. Rockets,
Warriors vs. Clippers, and the Trail-
blazers vs. Thunder. In the east,
we had Bucks vs. Pistons, Magic
vs. Raptors, Nets vs. Sixers, and
Celtics vs. Pacers. In the first
round, the Bucks blew out the
Pistons winning four games in a
row. Then, the Celtics also blew
out the Pacers by four games.
Then, Portland beat the Thunder
on game 5. The Rockets beat the
Jazz in game 5 as well. Then the
Sixers beat the Nets in game 5 too.
Finally, the Raptors beat the Magic
in game 5. The Clippers and the
Warriors are still fighting for their
spot in the NBA Finals. The Nug-
gets and Spurs are also still bat-
tling for their spot. The semi-finals
are going to be a wild ride. Who
do you think is going to win?
Book Corner:
Holes by Louis Sachar Review by Kimora C. & Jazzy P. 5th
Holes is a great book. It is
about a boy named
“Horse”. Horse’s dad makes
shoes. One day while he
was out, he saw flying
shoes…someone threw
them. When he saw the
shoes, he immediately
grabbed them and took them
home. Later on, the police arrived
and looked around for the shoes.
They told Horse he stole the shoes
What is a Pyrador?
By Brendan K. 5th
So what is a Pyrador? A Pyra-
dor is a “designer” or hybrid
breed of dogs that blends the
loving and sweet personality of
a Labrador with the protective
personality of the Great Pyre-
nees. The Great Pyrenees is a
mountain dog from France
that herds and protects sheep.
Because they are hybrids, they cannot join the American
Kennel Club’s (AKC) roster of purebred breeds. However,
both the Lab and the Great Pyrenees are members. These
beautiful Pyradors will be the perfect dog for a family that
is willing to work hard training it. They are usually hard-
headed and stubborn, so you will have to work hard to
train it. Because of the Pyrador’s Great Pyrenees mix, it will
probably want to guard you at all costs. They are very
large and can weigh over 80 pounds. Because they are a
deep-chested breed, they may throw up if you feed them
right after exercise and vise-versa. They must exercise to
keep stimulated and to prevent them from gaining weight.
You may want to be careful if you take them on leash-free
walks because Pyradors tend to like to roam, and a strong
hunting instinct may make them chase smaller animals.
They usually live to be around ten years old. Pyradors are a
loving breed and are protective and loyal to their pack. I
have a Pyrador named “Opie,” and she is cuddly but feisty
at the same time. She shows her affection by chomping us.
Opie likes catching food in mid-air. She loves to run
around the trails. She barks at anything, even a moth flut-
tering in the air, but she is fun and I love her.
and now has to go to boot camp where you have to
dig 10 ft deep holes as punishment; It is like jail. The
next day, he went to court and was found guilty. He
got on the bus to go to boot camp which was
way out in the desert. While at boot camp, he
made a friend named X-Man, well that is what
they called him. Once while digging, they dug
so deep they got stuck in the hole. They cried
for help. No one answered. While in the hole
for days they found lots and lots of money.
Finally, they were discovered. As a reward for
finding the money, they were able to go back home
and keep some of the loads of money. Holes is a great
book you should read and there is also a movie based
on the book you should watch.

The first question I
asked DJ was,
“What’s your dream
job?”
He reported that he
wants to be a cardiolo-
gist. A doctor that re-
ceives special training
to treat and prevent
diseases of the heart
and blood vessels. He
wants to help people
who are suffering from
an unhealthy heart.
The second question I
asked was what’s
your dream car?
DJ said he wants a
beautiful Ferrari, or a
McLaren.
The third question I
asked was, “What’s
your favorite sport?”
DJ reported he loves to
play soccer, and it is
his favorite sport.
The last question I
asked him was what
state he wanted to
visit.
DJ said he wanted to
visit Rhode Island be-
cause he’s never gone
there before; he would
like to visit all the
iconic tourist sites.

The Never Ending Story
Review by Danny S. 5th
My dad sug-
gested that I
watch one of
his favorite
movies, The
Never Ending
Story. It is a
story about a
boy named Bastian who reads an
enchanted book. He goes into a
bookstore to avoid bullies, and
he finds a book named The Nev-
er Ending Story. He goes to his
school and reads it in the school
attic. The story is about a king-
dom that needs help from a hu-
man child to survive. He thinks
the child could be him. He won-
ders if the kingdom is real. I
think the movie is very interest-
ing because I like adventure. If
you like adventure movies, then
I think you will like it too!

Summer Time Fun
By Areanna J. 5th
The summer is here and it’s time to cast off some inhibitions, along with the winter clothing and make the most of the warmer weather. It’s time for bright clothes and laz-ing around, doing nothing more than soak-ing up the sun. But summer doesn’t last long, so here are some things that everyone should do this summer, before it gets too cold again. Summer won’t be summer un-less you invite some friends for a barbecue. Break out the grill and cook up a feast of under cooked burgers and overcooked chicken. Another cool and fun thing to do in the summer is going to an amusement park. Whether you have kids or not, an amusement park is always fun, for kids of all ages. Sitting in the sun is great, but sit-ting by the water’s edge is even better. Whether it’s a beach by the ocean or sitting by the side of a lake, a splash of the cool water is a great way to enjoy the sunny weather. Another fun thing to do in the summer is to go hiking. You really can’t enjoy the summer properly from the seat of the car, so park and go for a walk instead. When you walk in the open country, you get a chance to appreciate the nature around you and it’ll help keep you trim too. Fun things to do in the summer don’t necessari-ly need to be complicated. An ice cold drink, a hammock and a good read are the perfect way to unwind and relax on a balmy summer’s day. Another fun thing to do in the summer is to go to a drive-in movie. They’re still around, if you look for them, and a drive in movie is much more relaxed, than a regular movie theatre. A fantastic and nostalgic way to spend a summer even-ing. Pack a hamper with all your favorites and take off for a picnic. Spend a night or two in the fresh air and get really close to nature in a tent. You don’t have to rough it these days, to get the camping experience, you can buy all the modern camping equip-ment that will give you the comforts of your home or, if you really don’t like the idea of going out in the wilds, set up a tent in your back yard! At least, you won’t have far to go if it rains!
Have you heard that Dr. Tony Evans and Fel-lowship Christian Academy are expanding? Pastor Evans was not familiar with the Canter-bury campus until recently, but after visiting our beautiful campus and speaking with our board, Fellowship Christian Academy made it official that they were going to expand their campus. So, in the 2019/2020 school year, Canterbury and F.C.A. will join forces to be bigger and better than ever before. Stay posted for more updates!
Also, please pray for Pastor
Evans and his wife, Lois, as she battles with health issues.
CES Graduate: Pritul S.
By Aaralyn B. & Jordan W. 6th
Jordan and I had the pleasure of inter-
viewing Canterbury senior, Pirtul S. He
will be attending California Northstate
University in Elk Grove, CA. The most
important thing Pirtul has learned at
Canterbury is to have a strong work
ethic because if you don’t have a work
ethic then you won’t succeed. His best
memory here was on his trip to Wash-
ington his freshman year. One thing
he’s done to be successful is to have an
open mind. He’s most inspired by his
dad; he works hard to achieve a goal
by helping others both personally and
professionally. His biggest risk academi-
cally was waiting until the last minute
to write papers. He has self discipline
by reminding himself when to study,
talk, listen, and work. Some study tips
he’s used are to really know the materi-
al and not procrastinate. His biggest
dream is to become a surgeon and
own a Ferrari.
National Day of Prayer
By Zipporah J. 5th
The
Na-
tional
Day of
Prayer
is on
Thursday, May 2nd
. It all started
in 1952 by a joint resolution of
the United States congress,
and signed into law by Presi-
dent Harry S. Truman. This day
invites people of all faiths to
pray for the nation. It also en-
courages Christians to pray for
America’s leaders. This day has
become a national observation
placed on all hallmark calen-
dars and observed across the
nation and in Washington D.C.
Every President since 1952 has
signed a National Day of Pray-
er proclamation. This year’s
theme for the 2019 National
Day of Prayer is Love One An-
other. The theme comes from
the words of Jesus in John
13:34, “Love one another. Just
as I have loved you.”
