Why Kevin Craig will miss 2010 and love 2011Published in Athens Banner-Herald on December 30 as part of “MQ’s Year-end Review”
We've got two years to cover, so let's jump right in with my five favorite item
! Album: "Get Him to the Greek" Soundtrack - While the film is a relatively
follow-up to 2008's "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," its music is unexpectedly p
Presented as a full-length album by the movie's fictitious band Infant Sorro
soundtrack parodies modern rock with its Coldplay-esque, rocking Brit-pop
often confuses the listener by being silly, even hilarious at times, but alway
strangely good. As a songwriter and unapologetic Weird Al fan, I'm fascina
style parody - it's a rigid art form, like the sonnet. Turning an arguably funn
solid modern rock album can't be easy, but in doing so, the soundtrack's s
produced one of the most interesting musical exercises of 2010.
! Band: Yo Soybean - With their high-energy brand of modern folk, these
(and gal) have found their way into my calloused heart. If you find Bright Ey
pretentious and The Avett Brothers too simple, you should settle nicely into
Soybean's growing fanbase. I've heard a lot of innovative genre blending, s
sensibilities and generally impressive new folk this year, so choosing one a

Georgia Theatre benefit March 29. Most exciting of all, NOFX plays a rare
show Feb. 1 at The Masquerade in Atlanta.
!Electric cars - The futuristic society we currently inhabit is scheduled formonumental upgrade in 2011. After years of barely placated confusion ove
nonexistent electric car industry, we're finally going to see mass-produced,
electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt next year. Here's to h
transforms our society into a super-cool sci-fi robot world.
! Georgia Theatre's grand reopening - According to the temporarily slain
recent marquee listing, business will resume sometime in 2011. I knew tha
2009 fire couldn't hold her down forever, but I also assumed that rebuilding
devastation would take a staggeringly long time. As long as two years seewill be worth the wait. Like most Athenians, I long to safely/legally walk thro
doors again. I must admit, however, that I'll miss the ever-changing whims
listings like "Ouch," "Men at Work," and "Will You Marry Me, (lady's name)
building's personality really seems to have shone without all of those conce
the way.
