Rangiriri Paa and urban design concepts finalisedCultureandheritageplansforthehistoricRangiririPaahavenowbeenfinalised.TheMinistryforCultureandHeritage,Waikato-TainuiandHeritageNewZealandhaveworkedtogetherwiththeTransportAgency,FletcherConstructionandconsultantsBoffaMiskelltoreachthefinalconcept.Amulti-platearchculvertthatspanstheoriginal1840battletrenchunderneaththenewExpresswayisnowlargelycomplete.Thisisoneelementofanumberthatrecognisesthehistoricandculturalimportanceoftheareainrelationtothe1863BattleofRangiriri.

RealigningthestatehighwayawayfromthepaasitewillallowthecurrentsectionofSH1tobefilledinandaconnectioncreatedbetweenRangiririandthePaa.Aparkingareaforbusesandcarswillalsobeprovidedaspartofthedesign.

AconceptplanfortheurbandesignoftheentrancetoRangiriri,alongsideRangiririRoadandadjacenttotheRangiririHotel,hasalsobeendevelopedinconsultationwiththeWaikatoDistrictCouncil.

Theplanwillincludeaplantedscreenbetweenthefuturesouth-boundon-ramptotheExpresswayandthememorialarea.TheWWIIMemorialGateswillbereinstatedandconsiderationwillbegiventoprovidingapicnicareanearby.

TheheritageoftheareaisalsobeingreflectedontheRangiririinterchangebridge.Thebridge’sconcretebarrierswerecastonsiteandincludeapalisadepatterntoreferencethehistoricRangiririPaa.

Expressway overview mapTheWaikatoExpresswayprojectwillimprovesafetyandreliabilityandreducetraveltimesandcongestiononStateHighway1bydeliveringafour-lanehighwayfromtheBombayHillstosouthofCambridge.TheExpresswayisbeingbuiltinsevensections.

TheRangiririsectionoftheWaikatoExpresswaycameuptrumpsattherecentWaikatoRegionalCouncilEarthworksawards.

TheFletcherprojectteamwasrecognisedjointlyalongsideHEBConstructionfromtheCambridgesectionwinningthebestlargeearthworkssiteaward.

The4.8kmsectioninvolves1.6millioncubicmetresofearthworks.

Hamilton’sHighwaysManagerKayeClarksaysit’sgreattoseetheindustrybeinglaudedfortheirwork.

“Itshowsourcommitmenttocarefulplanningandbestpracticetoensureourprojectsminimiseanyadverseeffectsonwaterwaysandwaterquality.”

CouncilchairpersonPaulaSouthgate,whoattendedtheceremony,saidthestandardshadbeenrisingsomuchthatthecouncilhadalsointroducednew“specialrecognition”awardsthisyear.

“It’sgreattoseesuchstrongbuyinfromtheindustrytoliftingtheirperformancebar.Thecouncilreallyappreciatestheeffortsbeingmade.

Work in full swingThesummerworksseasonisunderwaywhichmeansmotoriststravellingthroughthesitewillseesomechangestothetrafficmanagementonStateHighway1,whilepeopleaccessinglocalroadsintheareamayhavetonegotiatesomedetours.

TheTransportAgencyandFletcherConstructionareworkinghardtominimiseanydisruptionordelaysandappreciateboththecommunityandmotorists’patiencewhilethey’recarryingoutthiswork.

Thebiggestchangewillbeaproposedfive-dayclosureoftheGlenMurrayBridge,plannedtostartinthelaterpartofNovember.Actualdateswillbeconfirmedinthenextfewweekstoensurewegiveeveryoneplentyofnotice.

TheclosurewillallowtheteamtoconnectthenewRangiririinterchangebridgetotheexistingGlenMurrayBridgeandcompleteassociatedservicesandworksincludingstreetlighting,trafficsignals,footpathsandkerbsandlinemarking.

OtherworkhappeningacrossthesitebetweennowandDecemberincludesdrainagecrossingsbeinginstalledacrossStateHighway1,southofRangiriri,andongoingworksconstructingboththefuturesouth-boundon-rampatRangiririandthefuturesouth-boundlanes.

WorkwillalsocontinueontheRangiriricul-de-sacandattheRangiririintersection,whichincludestheremovaloftheexistingtrafficislandsattheRangiririintersection(adjacenttotheRangiririHotel).

Pleasenote,thesouth-boundleftturnintoRangiriri(currentlyclosed)fromthestatehighwaywillbeopenedtotrafficagainbeforeChristmas.Atthenorthernendoftheprojecttheteamarebusyconstructingthenorth-boundon-rampfromtheTeKauwhatainterchangeandinstallingretainingwallsanddrainage.

Speed on State Highway 1

through the Rangiriri work site is restricted to 70km/h.Thespeedlimitisinplacetoprotectbothworkersonsiteandthetravelingpublic
