Project Proposal

Agriculture, Sanitation and Healthcare

In Muñoz, Dominican Republic

February 2012

Brian Newhouse, CEO and founder of Village12

Muñoz, Dominican Republic

As mentioned in the first video, the three target areas based on our assessment were in agriculture, sanitation and healthcare. Village12 is launching four projects to address the problem in each of these areas:

1) Community cleanup and public park installation.

2) Agriculture production.

3) Latrines and composting system.

4) Medical clinic and healthcare courses.

Projects

Community Park and Cleanup

Problem: • Garbage is scattered throughout the community. • There are no garbage cans and few community gathering areas.

Community Park and Cleanup

• Projected output: A garbage-free environment, with a functioning recycling center and system and a public park.

• Status: After 2 weeks of working, 40m3 of garbage has been removed. Workers are leveling the area for drainage and preparing to spread gravel.

Duration: 80 days

Park and Cleanup Expenses

Total Park: $ 6,528

Agriculture Program

Problem: People do not eat or grow enough food.

Agriculture Program

• Projected output: Use innovative and efficient growing systems to maximize crop output and grow enough food to feed everyone.

• Status: Tilled and planted one plot with eggplants. Team assembled. Ready to continue working.

Duration: 80 days

Agriculture Expenses

Total Agriculture: $ 8,265

Latrine Program

Problem: There are not enough toilets. The 28 that are present are in poor condition.

• Projected output: Build 75 (est) low-cost, locally-sourced, locally-approved latrine toilets, enough for 1 for every 10 people. Build a composting system to process the human waste into fertilizer. Hire a batey resident to routinely service the toilets and composting bin.

• Status: Design phase at Suncamp. Will follow the SOIL (www.oursoil.org) composting method of disposal.

Latrine Program

Duration: 120 days

Latrine Expenses

Total Latrine: $ 25,928

Medical clinic and Healthcare education

Problem: Malnourishment, dehydration and unsanitary living conditions cause many people to be weak and sick. People do not have the access, attention or education needed to lead healthy, clean lives.

• Projected output: An operating a medical clinic, staffed with medical practitioners and stocked with over-the-counter medicines. Regularly offer courses like nutrition, hygiene and first aid to train healthcare workers.

• Status: Recruiting medical staff

Medical clinic and Healthcare education

Duration: 36 days

Medical Clinic Expenses

Total Healthcare: $ 6,865

Risk factor

• The Central Bank, which is the government, owns the land of the bateys. The history between Haitians and Dominicans is violent and we have been told the Central Bank has discriminated against the Haitians before. However, despite these rough pasts, we have been in close communication with Central Bank representatives and other community leaders. They told us they are pleased with our progress so far.

• Mitigation Steps: If a situation does arise, we are prepared to peacefully defend people’s rights to a clean, livable environment.

Estimated Project Expenses

Community Park and Cleanup $ 6,528

Agriculture 8,265 Latrines 25,928Clinic 6,865

Total $ 47,586

Reporting back Every week we will submit a full report on our progress and obstacles, expenses, charts, graphs and photos
