Indicators relating to the general socio-economic context RuralityThe definition of rural areas was based on the OECD concept, which was adapted for the Portuguesereality.
OECD MethodologyClassifying NUTS III as Predominantly Urban (less than 15% of the population living in parishes with apopulation density <150 inhab/km2), Significantly Rural (=Intermediary) (between 15 and 50% of thepopulation living in parishes with a population density <150 inhab/km2) and Predominantly Rural (morethan 50% of the population living in parishes with a population density < 150 inhab/km2).
Adjustment adopted1 – NUTS III parishes classified as Predominantly Urban shall be considered Rural provided that they
are less favoured.2 – NUTS III parishes classified as Significantly Urban shall be considered Rural provided that: they are
less favoured or although favoured, they are integrated into municipalities in which at least 10% ofthe economically active population is employed in agriculture and forestry.
3 – NUTS III parishes classified as Predominantly Urban shall be considered Rural.4 – Parishes in any of the NUTS III including population centres with at least 15 000 inhabitants shall
not be classified as Rural.

Note:According to the concepts of the National Accounts. product subsidies are included in the basicprice. when output is assessed. This estimation method implies a distinction between “subsidies toproducts” and “other subsidies to production”.The introduction of the SPS leads to a gradual transitionof the amounts enrolled under the first heading to the second one.
