"He is surprised by the many musical pieces. After a long wait, he reaches the piano.
Di he take his time, or did he surrender to the music? He arrives at the piano and sits
in front of it but he does nothing. He is playing Franz Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody No.
2, where the piano move between violins that he cannot not see. The Rhapsody is
like a sad sea, and unconsciously, he started moving his arms like the maestro. His
head is also moving in great absorption. He arrived for Mozart, but was taken by
Liszt. Now, he is playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21. Mozart is back. Amadeus
Mozart is back. A tear was about to escape his eyes. The quick piano melodies of
Liszt took him to Mozart. He does not know how that happened to him. What a

The failure of democracy in Iraq : religion, ideology and sectarianism / Hamid
Alkifaey. - Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor &
Francis Group, 2019. - 228 p. ; 25 cm. - (Routledge studies in Middle Eastern
democratization and government ; 25)
The Failure of Democracy in Iraq studies democratization in post-2003 Iraq that has
so far failed due mainly to cultural and religious reasons. There are other factors,
such as legacy of the dictatorial regime, exclusionary policies, stateness problem,
interference by regional powers, rentier economy and sectarianism, that have
impeded democracy and contributed to its failure, but the employment of religion in
politics was the most to blame. The establishment of stable democratic institutions
continues to elude Iraq, 15 years after toppling the dictatorship. The post-2003 Iraq
could not completely eradicate the long historical tradition of despotic governance due
to deep-seated religious beliefs and tribal values, along with widening societal ethno-
sectarian rifts which precluded the negotiation of firm and stable elite settlements and
pacts across communal lines. The book examines how the fear by neighbouring
countries of a region-wide domino effect of the Iraq democratization process caused
them to adopt interventionist policies towards Iraq that helped to stunt the
development of democracy. The lack of commitment by the initiator of democratic
process, the United States, undermined the prospects of democratic consolidation.
This is compounded by serious mistakes such as the Deba'athification and
disbanding the Iraqi army and security apparatuses which caused a security vacuum
the US forces were not able to fill. The Failure of Democracy in Iraq is a key resource
for all students and academics interested in Democracy, Islam and Middle East

Suzan" (You are Suzanne's Clique) : gender and political opportunities in the 2011
uprising -- What holds next? The politics of hope and disappointment -- Conclusion. -
Since the fall of the former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, female activists have
faced the problem of how to transform the spirit of the uprising into long-lasting reform
of the political and social landscape. In Women and the Egyptian Revolution, Nermin
Allam tells the story of the 2011 uprising from the perspective of the women who
participated, based on extensive interviews with female protestors and activists. The
book offers an oral history of women's engagement in this important historical
juncture; it situates women's experience within the socio-economic flows, political
trajectories, and historical contours of Egypt. Allam develops a critical vocabulary that
captures women's activism and agency by looking both backwards to Egypt's gender
history and forwards to the outcomes and future possibilities for women's rights. An
important contribution to the under-researched topic of women's engagement in
political struggles in the Middle East and North Africa, this book will have a wide-
ranging impact on its field and beyond

both as an aspect of their religious observance and community belonging, and as a
fashion statement, drawing upon global Islamic fashion industry. Anna-Mari Almila
uses rich ethnographic investigation of everyday veiling practices among Muslim
women in the city of Helsinki as a lens through which to reflect on and advance
understanding of matters concerning Muslim dress in international Muslim minority
contexts. Almila provides an innovative approach to studying veiling by connecting
varied realms of practice, demonstrating how domains such as fashion, materiality,
city spaces, private life, religious beliefs, and cosmopolitan social conditions are all
tightly bound up together in ways that only a sensitive multi-disciplinary approach can
reveal"-- Provided by publisher

Lebanon's tumultuous years -- 3 Al-faragh, or the vacuum : Lebanon between two
presidents -- 4 Al-za 'ama : on political leadership and partisanship in Lebanon -- pt. II
The time of the everyday 5 Al-mishwar, or the walk : on space and capital in
contemporary Lebanon -- 6 Al-akharin, or the others : on Lebanon's refugees and
migrant workers -- 7 Al-sahra, or the night out : on leisure and pleasure in
contemporary Lebanon -- 8 Tal'it rihatkum, or 'you stink' : on waste and the Lebanese
body politic. - "Lebanon seems a country in the grip of permanent crisis. In recent
years it has suffered blow after blow, from Rafiq Hariri's assassination in 2005, to the
2006 July War, to the current Syrian conflict, which has brought a million refugees
streaming into the country. This is an account not just of Lebanon's high politics, with
its endless rows, walk-outs, machinations and foreign alliances, but also of the politics
of everyday life: all the stresses and strains the country's inhabitants face, from
electricity black-outs and uncollected rubbish to stagnating wages and property
bubbles. Andrew Arsan moves between parliament and the public squares where
protesters gather, between luxury high-rises and refugee camps, and between
expensive nightclubs and seafront promenades, providing a comprehensive view of
Lebanon in the twenty-first century. Where others have treated Lebanon's woes as
exceptional, a by-product of its sectarianism and particular vulnerability to regional
crises, Arsan argues that there is nothing particular about Lebanon's predicament.
Rather, it is a country of the age--one of neoliberal economics, populist fervour,
forced displacement, rising xenophobia, and public disillusion. Lebanon, in short,
offers us a lens through which to look on our times." -- Publisher's description

colectivamente.

Text and image in medieval Persian art / Sheila S. Blair. - Edinburgo : Edinburgh
University Press, [2019]. - xv, 336 p. : il. color, mapas, planos ; 25 cm. - (Edinburgh
studies in Islamic art)
This book investigates the interaction between word and image in medieval Persian
art. Greater Iranian arts from the 10th to the 16th century are technically some of the
finest produced anywhere. They are also intellectually engaging, showing the lively
interaction between the verbal and the visual arts. Focusing on objects found in the
main media at the time, Sheila S. Blair shows how artisans played with form, material
and decoration to engage their audiences. She also shows how the reception of these
objects has changed and that their present context has implications for our
understanding of the past. It is lavishly illustrated in colour. It features five case
studies - on ceramics, metalwares, painting, architecture and textiles - that showcase
the variety of Persian art. It investigates the interaction between the visual and the
verbal in a multi-lingual society. It looks at the transformation of everyday objects into
works of art. It is written by one of the foremost experts in Persian art. - Bibliografía:

Writing history in the medieval Islamic world : the value of chronicles as archives /
Fozia Bora. - Londres : I.B. Tauris, cop.2019. - xviii, 250 p. : il. ; 24 cm. - (Early and
medieval Islamic world)
Includes bibliographical references (pages 223-240) and index. - Includes selected
extracts of Tarikh al-duwal wa-al-muluk in Arabic and English. - In two centuries of
rule over Egypt and North Africa (969-1171CE), the Isma'ili Fatimids threatened
Sunni hegemony in the Arab heartlands, yet left few historiographical records.
Instead, it fell to Ayyubid and Mamluk historians to represent the Fatimids to posterity.
Did medieval Arab historians allow religious commitments and sectarian polemics to
shape their accounts of the Islamic past? And did the succeeding Sunni political class
destroy the records of its Fatimid predecessors? Via a new translation,
contextualisation and analysis of Sunni Mamluk historian Ibn al-Furat's chronicle
History of Dynasty and Kings, Fozia Bora maps the survival of historiographical
narratives from late Fatimid Egypt after Salah al-Din's alleged destruction of the
Fatimid literary corpus. In so doing, Bora demonstrates that Mamluk historical works
offer historiographical documentation of past eras of Islamic history through textual
witnesses that are not otherwise extant. She espouses a 'chronicle as archive'
framework, arguing for a more objective use of chronicles as documents that go
beyond sectarian polemics to act as 'archives' of now lost material. This book is
essential for all scholars working on the written culture and history of the medieval
Islamic world, and paves the way for a more nuanced and sensitive treatment of
Arabic chronicles

Abdelaziz Boumeshouli. - In this revealing new study, Tarik Sabry and Joe Khalil
preside over an original new exploration of Arab culture. They employ subjects as
varied as anthropology, media studies, philosophy, political economy and cultural
studies to illuminate the relationship between culture, time and publics in an Arab
context, whilst also laying the foundations for a much more nuanced picture of Arab
society. The diverse themes and locations explored include communities at borders,
in rural and urban locations, Syrian drama audiences, Egyptian, Saudi and Tunisian
artists and activists and historical and contemporary Arab intellectuals. This fresh
empirical research and interdisciplinary analysis illuminate intricate experiences that
transcend local, national and religious boundaries and expose how Arab publics
combine the media and technology to create a rich experience that shapes their
collective imagination and social structure. Providing a grounded orientation to key
debates on time and what can be defined as public in modern Arab cultures, Sabry
and Khalil address teachers, students and those concerned about the delicate
structures that underpin the upheavals of the modern Arab world

Bibliografía: p.199-208. - Índice. - Lebanese society is famously, and even
notoriously, fragmented, along both class and sectarian lines. Here, Nabil Dajani
looks at how this societal division impacts on the nature of the mass media in
Lebanon. Implementing the wider theory that the structure and content of mass media
is unique to the society within which it operates, he looks at how Lebanese media
have often helped to sustain the sectarian divisions within Lebanese society. Dealing
with newspapers, radio and television as well as new and emerging forms of
communication, such as the internet, social media websites and blogs, he examines
how the media both reflect societal realties as well as the ways they influence social
consciousness. Beginning with an analysis of the socio-political context of modern-
day Lebanon, Dajani critically examines the historical and current realities of the
media in this country

Conflict Patterns explores the policies of the successive Syrian governments towards
the Arab tribes and their reactions to these policies. The book examines the
consequences of the relationship between state and tribe since the fall of the
Ottoman Empire and its withdrawal from Syria in 1916 until the eruption of the current
Syrian civil war. Throughout history and up to the present day, tribalism continues to
influence many issues related to governance, conflict and stability in the Middle East
and North Africa. The book provides a dissection of a crucial, but neglected axis of
the current crisis on the relationship between the state and the tribes. The research
draws on data gathered through interviews with members of Syrian tribes, as well as
written literature in various languages including English, Arabic and French. The book
combines the research focus of political scientists, and anthropologists by relating the
local patterns (communities and tribal affiliations) to the larger system (state
institutions and policies) of which they are a part of. State and Tribes in Syria advance
our knowledge of an under-studied component of the Syrian society: the tribes.
Therefore it is a vital resource for students, scholars and policymakers interested in

Regulating Islam : religion and the state in contemporary Morocco and Tunisia /
Sarah J. Feuer. - Cambridge, United Kingdom : Cambridge University Press, 2018. -
xv, 227 p. ; 24 cm
Many countries in the Arab world have incorporated Islam into their state- and nation-
building projects, naming it the 'religion of the state'. 'Regulating Islam' offers an
empirically rich account of how and why two contemporary Arab states, Morocco and
Tunisia, have sought to regulate religious institutions and discourse. Drawing on a
range of previously unexamined sources, Sarah J. Feuer traces and analyzes the
efforts of Moroccan and Tunisian policymakers to regulate Islamic education as part
of the respective regimes' broader survival strategies since their independence from
French rule in 1956. Out of the comparative case study emerges a compelling theory
to account for the complexities of religion-state dynamics across the Arab world
today, highlighting the combined effect of ideological, political, and institutional factors
on religious regulation in North Africa and the Middle East. The book makes an
important and timely contribution to the on-going scholarly and policy debates
concerning religion, politics, and authoritarian governance in the post-uprisings Arab

Comics in contemporary Arab culture : politics, language and resistance / Jacob
Høigilt. - xii, 229 p., 8p.no numeradas : il., color ; 24 cm. - (Library of modern Middle
East studies ; 213)
Includes bibliographical references (pages 212-222) and index. - Comic books for
adults have become one of the most novel and colourful forms of cultural expression
in the Arab world today. During the last ten years, young Arabs have crafted stories
explaining issues such as authoritarianism, resistance, war, sex, gender relations and
youth culture. These are distributed through informal channels as well as independent
bookstores and websites. Events like the annual Cairocomix festival in Egypt and the
Mahmoud Kahil Award in Lebanon evidence the importance of this cultural
phenomenon. 0Comics in Contemporary Arab Culture focuses on the production of
these comics in Egypt and Lebanon, countries at the forefront of the development of
the genre for adults. Jacob Hoigilt guides the reader through the emergence of
independent comics, explores their social and political critique, and analyses their
visual and verbal rhetoric. Analysing more than 50 illustrations, included here, he
shows that Arab comics are revealing of the changing attitudes towards politics,
social relations and even language. While political analysts often paint a bleak picture
of the Arab world after 2011, this book suggests that art and storytelling continue to
nourish a spirit of liberty and freedom despite political setbacks. Comics in
Contemporary Arab Culture provides a fresh and original insight into the politics of the
Middle East and cultural expression in the Arab World

The political economy of reforms in Egypt : issues and policymaking since 1952 /
Khalid Ikram. - Cairo ; New York : The American University in Cairo Press, [2018]. -

Bibliografía: p.385-412. - Índice. - Introduction -- The political economy of reform: a
survey with special reference to Egypt -- Challenges and performance, 1952-2016 --
The population and related issues -- Political economy in the Nasser period, 1952-70
-- Political economy in the Sadat period, 1970-1981 -- Political economy in the
Mubarak period, 1981-2011 -- After Mubarak, 2011-2016 -- The task ahead. - What
are the long-term structural features of the Egyptian economy? What are the factors
that have facilitated or inhibited its performance? This crucial and timely work
answers these questions and more by examining the most important economic
decisions to have impacted the Egyptian economy since 1952 and the political factors
behind them. Drawing on Khalid Ikram's extensive knowledge of economic
policymaking at the highest levels, The Political Economy of Reforms in Egypt lays
out the enduring features of the Egyptian economy and its performance since 1952
before presenting an account of policy-making, growth and structural change under
the country's successive presidents to the present day. Topics covered include
agrarian reforms; the Aswan High Dam; the move towards Arab socialism and a
planned economy; the reversal of strategy and the infitah; fiscal, monetary, and
exchange-rate policies; consumer subsidies; external debt crises; negotiations
between Egypt and international donors and financial institutions; privatization; labor
and employment; and poverty and income distribution. The analysis concludes with
an examination of institutional reforms and development strategies to tackle the
Egyptian economy's structural problems and lay the foundation for sustained and
rapid growth. Written from the point of view of a 'participant-observer,' this book will
be indispensable to students of political economy, to scholars of Egypt and the Middle
East, and to the general reader who wishes to understand, especially from the wealth
of insider information provided, how domestic and international politics and
economics can interact to shape decisions that promote, or prevent, economic
reforms

- Introduction -- Preachers and mosques -- Sex and dating --
Islamophobia and the alt-right -- Influencers, gamers and trolls -- Extremism, counter-
extremism -- Spaces for minorities -- Conclusion. - What does it mean to be Muslim in
Britain today? If the media is anything to go by, it has something to do with mosques,
community leaders, whether you wear a veil, and what your views on religious
extremists are. But as all our lives become increasingly entwined with our online
presence, British Muslims are taking to social media to carve their own narratives and
tell their own stories, challenging stereotypes along the way. This book explores how
young Muslims in Britain are using the internet to determine their own religious
identity, both within their communities and as part of the country they live in. Entering
a world of Muslim dating apps, social media influencers, online preachers, and
LGBTQ and ex-Muslim groups, journalist Hussein Kesvani explores how British Islam
has evolved into a multi-dimensional cultural identity that goes well beyond the
confines of the mosque. He shows how a new generation of Muslims who have grown
up in the internet age use blogs, vlogging, and tweets to define their religion on their
terms -- something that could change the course of 'British Islam' forever

Arabs : a 3,000-year history of peoples, tribes and empires / Tim Mackintosh-Smith. -
New Haven : Yale University Press, [2019]. - xxvi, 630 p., 16 p. no numeradas :
il.color, mapas ; 24 cm
Bibliografía:p. 602-608. - Índice. - This kaleidoscopic book covers almost 3,000 years
of Arab history and shines a light on the footloose Arab peoples and tribes who
conquered lands and disseminated their language and culture over vast distances.
Tracing this process to the origins of the Arabic language, rather than the advent of
Islam, Tim Mackintosh-Smith begins his narrative more than a thousand years before
Muhammad and focuses on how Arabic, both spoken and written, has functioned as a
vital source of shared cultural identity over the millennia. Mackintosh-Smith reveals
how linguistic developments-from pre-Islamic poetry to the growth of script,
Muhammad's use of writing, and the later problems of printing Arabic-have helped
and hindered the progress of Arab history, and investigates how, even in today's
politically fractured post-Arab Spring environment, Arabic itself is still a source of unity
and disunity. - Foreword : the wheel and the hourglass -- Introduction : gathering the

Aleppo : the rise and fall of Syria's great merchant city / Philip Mansel. - New

"Aleppo lies in ruins. Its streets are plunged in darkness, most of its population has
fled. But this was once a vibrant world city, where Muslims, Christians and Jews lived
and traded together in peace. Few places are as ancient and diverse as Aleppo - one
of the oldest, continuously inhabited cities in the world - successively ruled by the
Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Arab, Ottoman and French empires. Under the
Ottomans, it became the empire's third largest city, after Constantinople and Cairo. It
owed its wealth to its position at the end of the Silk Road, at a crossroads of world
trade, where merchants from Venice, Isfahan and Agra gathered in the largest suq in
the Middle East. Throughout the region, it was famous for its food and its music. For
400 years British and French consuls and merchants lived in Aleppo; many of their
accounts are used here for the first time"-- Publisher's description.

monde, 2006)."--Page 4 of cover

Ayesha Northey. - Londres : I.B. Tauris, 2018. - xiii, 240 p : il. ; 23 cm. - (International
library of African studies ; 61)
Bibliografía: p. 226-236. - Índice. - Are new forms of activism emerging in Algeria?
Can civil society effect political reform in the country? The violence between radical
Islamists and the military during the Algerian civil war of the 1990s led to huge loss of
life and mass exile. The public sphere was rendered a dangerous place for over a
decade. Yet in defiance of these conditions, civil society grew, with thousands of
associations forming throughout the conflict. Associations were set up to protect
human rights and vulnerable populations, commemorate those assassinated and
promote Algerian heritage. There are now over 93,000 associations registered across
the country. Although social, economic and political turbulence continues, new
networks still emerge and, since the Arab revolts of 2011, organised demonstrations
increasingly take place. Civil Society in Algeria examines these recent developments
and scrutinizes the role associations play in promoting political reform and
democratization in Algeria. Based on extensive fieldwork undertaken both before and
after the Arab Spring, the book shows how associations challenge government policy
in the public sphere. Algeria is playing an increasingly important role in the stability
and future peaceful relations of the Middle East and North Africa. This book reveals
the new forms of activism that are challenging the ever-powerful state. It is a valuable
resource for Algeria specialists and for scholars researching political reform and
democratization across the Middle East and North Africa. -- Provided by publisher

creativity. This resulted in the emergence of a new literary genre: the autofictional
blog. Such blogs are explored here as forms of digital literature, combining literary
analysis and interviews with the authors. The blogs analysed give readers a glimpse
into the daily lives, feelings and aspirations of the Egyptian youth who have pushed
the country towards a revolution. The narratives are also indicative of significant
aesthetic and political developments taking place in Arabic literature and culture,
giving an insight to the mindset of Arab youth in times of a cultural and political
revolution

Central Asian Muslims -- Muslims of Uzbekistan -- Muslims of Kazakhstan -- Muslims
of Kyrgyzstan -- Muslims of Tajikistan -- Muslims of Turkmenistan. - "Between the
tenth and sixteenth centuries Central Asia was one of the most prestigious cultural
areas of the entire Muslim world, playing a pivotal role in the Silk Road trade.
Throughout that history, and up to the present, Tajiks, Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz,
Turkmen and other Muslim peoples of Central Asia have developed their own unique
understanding and practice of Islam which has shaped their national identity and
particular social and political evolution. These special characteristics of Central Asian
Islam ensured its survival during seventy years of Soviet atheist rule, while in the
post-Soviet period Islam has been integrated into nation-building projects in
constitutionally secular Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and
Turkmenistan. This absorbing history is traced in this fascinating study which shows
how, from the seventh century to the present day, the region's people have
negotiated their distinctively Central Asian Islamic identity in the face of enduring
external Islamic and non-Islamic dominations, ethnic nationalisms and, more recently,
global transnational Islamic influences"--Back cover
