INTRODUCTION
REPORTING ADMISSIONS AND ENROLLMENT
Information for this report is drawn from the computer files maintajned by theUndergraduate and Graduate Admissions Offices and Registrars. These are working files, built from the daily transactions that represent the campus’s official actions with respect to
student admissions and enrollment. These “primary” data are captured, processed, andverified before they are put into table form for publication.
Admissions and enrollment activity is ongoing, but a “snapshot” of the data is taken as
of the end of the fourteenth calendar day of each semester, It typically takes three or four
days for all transactions “as of” this census date to be posted to the computer files.
We report enrollment activity at three levels. The school or college is the basic level
of analysis. Within this, activity is shown by department or program, and within depart
ment or program by dIscipline or major, where appropriate (thus, enrollment of HispanicLiteratures and Linguistics majors is shown within the Spanish and Portuguese Department within the College of Humanities and Fine Arts). Admissions activity is reported onlyat the school or college level, the level at which most undergraduates are admjtted.Graduate admissions at the department or program level are reported in the GraduateSchool Factbook, published by the Graduate School.
Beginning Fall 1995, calculation of undergraduate enrollment data for student majorsand instructed students are based upon students’ primary and secondary majors.Previous reports examined students’ primary major only. Reporting conventions forstudents with multiple majors are as follows: (1) Headcount student majors are computedusing all declared majors, (2) FTE student majors are distributed to all major programs, and(3) instructional credit for majors is based on students with any declared major. At theschool and college level the number of primary and secondary majors is reported. Thenumber of primary majors is comparable to headcount student majors reported in previoussemesters. There is no change in the way graduate enrollment is reported. See Enrollment Definitions for a more detailed explanation,

ENROLLMENT DEFINITIONS DATA COMPARABILITY
Headcount Student Major is the actual count of individual students who haveselected a given major. Every student is assigned a “major”’, even though it may be only anadministrative classification (e.g. “non-degree” or “undeclared).
At the undergraduate level, the count of student majors include students’ declaredprimary and secondary majors. Within and across schools and colleges, each department and program receives credit for each student major. For example, if a studentdeclares a primary major in Journalism and a secondary major in Political Science, bothdepartments in their respective colleges receive credit for that student major. In Spring1996, there were 864 students with more than one major.
Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) Student Majors show how many headcount studentsthere would be if all students took a “full” credit load (15 credits for undergraduates; 9 forgraduate students, effective Spring 1992). We look at the credits generated by studentswithin each major — regardless of where the courses are offered — and then divide by 15 or9, as appropriate. For undergraduate FTE student majors, the number of credits aredistributed based on the number of declared majors. As in the previous example, half ofthe student’s total credits would be assigned to Journalism, and half would be assigned toPolitical Science. Previously, all credits were attributed to Journalism.
Before Spring 1992, 12 credits were considered a full credit load for graduatestudents. To convert FTE student majors prior to Spring 1992, multiply the currentsemester’s FTE by .75.
FTE Instructed Students is our measure of instruction offered and consumed, regardless of the majors of the students taught. We look at the credits generated in thecourses offered by each discipline, calculate full-time equivalency, and then distributeinstruction according to “majors “ and “non-majors.” FTE instructed “majors” are defined asstudents with any declared major within the department or program offering the course;instructional credits for “majors” are assigned when the student taking the course is also amajor in the department offering the course. All other students, including those without adeclared major or pre-majors, are defined as “non-majors.” In the case of the student withmajors in Journalism and Political Science, FTE’s generated in Journalism and PoliticalScience would be classified as instruction to majors in the respective departments.Previously, only Joumalism would have been credited with instruction in the major.
Unlike FTE Student Majors, calculation of FTE tnstructed Students depends on the levelof the course being taken and the level of the student taking the course. For undergraduate courses (those numbered 100-499) we always divide by 15, whether the student isundergraduate or graduate. Similarly, for graduate courses (those numbered 600-899) wealways divide by 9 (prior to Spring 1992, the divisor was 12). For courses numbered 500-599, however, we look to see what kind of student is taking the course: if undergraduate,we divide by 15; if graduate, we divide by 9.
Admissions and enrollment data presented in this report are based on the currentorganizational structure of academic units and departments. Therefore, School or Collegetotals may not be directly comparable to previous semesters due to the consolidation, reassignment, or suspension of selected academic programs. During the course of any givensemester, departmental or programmatic changes may occur. Typically, these changes (e.g.,program name change, addition or consolidation of undergraduate majors) do not affect thenumbers at the school or college level.
Numbers for this report may not be directly comparable to prior semesters as a result oforganizational changes. In addition, enrollment numbers are not directly comparable toprevious semesters due to the inclusion of students with multiple majors.
The following organizational or programmatic changes are in effect for Academic Year1996-1997:
• The Department of French and Italian in the College of Humanities and Fine Artshas been renamed French and Italian Studies. The French major has beenrenamed French and Francophone Studies.
• The Department of Plant Pathology in the College of Food and Natural Resourceshas been consolidated with the Department of Microbiology.
• Graduate instruction offered through the Division of Continuing Education isreported as a separate instructional category within school or college.
• Effective Fall 1996, Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores are reported usingthe recentered scale. Recentering establishes both the average verbal and mathscores near 500, the midpoint of the 200-800 scoring scale.

Mean and percentiles not calculated when the number of cases is less than three.Includes students enrolled in at least one credit-beaiing course at the end of the fourteenth calendar day of the semester.
if Number of students for whom these data were available.
Note 1: Information is reported according to the School or College affiliation of the maior to which the student was accepted.
Note 2: SAT scores are calculated using the recentered scale. The comparable mean SAT calculated using the original scale is 642 for math, 479 for verbal, and a combined score of 1021.Note 3: Effective Fall 1993, students whose SAT scores are not used for admissions decisions are excluded.
