HOPE

Co-occurring disorders

1. Can sometimes be difficult to diagnose.

2. Symptoms of substance abuse or addiction can mask symptoms of

mental illness, and symptoms of mental illness can be confused with

symptoms of addiction.

3. People with mental health disorders sometimes do not address their

substance use because they don't believe it is relevant to their

problems.

Approximately 8.9 million adults have co-occurring disorders

Only 7.4 percent of individuals receive treatment for both conditions

with 55.8 percent receiving no treatment at all.* SAMHSA
