words are spoken.
What is Real-Time Captioning?
Real-time captions are white letters with a black background

line of the 3 lines disappears as a new bottom
line is added Live captioning is provided at time of program
origination In 1982, the National Captioning Institute (NCI)
developed real-time captioning services to give captioned TV viewers access to live programming
Why Use Real-Time Captioning? Captioners and sign-language interpreters address
different groups of people (each communication method has its strengths)
Can be used as an alternative to sign language for people who are oral and/or have lost hearing later in life
Accessible to people with normal hearing who rely on captions in difficult listening environments
