a) It Develops and preserves the national collection, which includes material produced in Greece, as well as material produced abroad but id connected or is relevant to the people, the country , the traditions, and the culture of Greece, in any given language or form. For this reason, it collects, processes, preserves, protects, presents and offers accessibility to the material of the collection to everyone, in an equal manner, keeping in mind the freedom of education, information, and research.

b) It develops activities relevant to its mission, in order to improve cultural and intellectual life of the country

c) Operates as national bibliographic and information centre and is a recipient of the mandatory deposit of material

d) Compiles and publishes past and current national bibliography, as well as catalogues of manuscripts and printed material or in any other format that exist in its collection or in other libraries.

e) Operates as the official national centre of directions, guidelines and standards in matters related to bibliography, preservation, conservation, digitization and material restoration and produce the informational material related to them.

f) Provides national services of international book numbering, of books (ISBN), periodical publications (ISSN), music (ISMN)

Universities (23 Institutions) concentrate on theoretical and scientific studies. Divided into School and Departments

Technological Educational Institutes ( 14 Institutions) provide education and skills in technical, artistic, scientific and other professional fields.

Educational System in Greece - Background Info

Provided for free in all levels Tertiary institutions (Universities & Higher Technological

Institutions) are autonomous, however the Ministry of Education is responsible for their funding, and the distribution of students to undergraduate courses

Admission to higher education: based on students’ performance in nationwide examinations

Undergraduate University courses: 4 years (5 in Engineering Schools and some Technical/Art Schools, 6 in Medical schools)

Postgraduate (MSc level) courses last from 1 to 2 years Doctorates (PhD level) from 3 to 6 years
