India had been bannedsince December 2012 afterelections at its Olympic asso-ciation (IOA) saw a corrup-tion-tainted official voted inas secretary general.

The IOC lifted the ban onFebruary 11 following freshelections last week, allowingIndia to be represented at theOlympics and bringing the to-tal number of nations com-peting at Russia’s first WinterGames to 88.

“Very, very emotional,”new IOA president N Rama-chandran said.

“For us after having beenout of the IOC and the Olym-pic movement for 15 monthsto come back to it and to come

back to it within two days ofour elections, I just couldn’tbelieve it,” he said.

The Indian delegation ar-rived at the ceremony at themountain athletes’ villageamid loud cheers.

“When the IOC lifted ourban in the midst of an Olym-pic event, it’s the first time it’s

happened and I am trulygrateful to the IOC PresidentThomas Bach ... for havinglifted the ban within twodays,” Ramachandran said.

India’s three athletes –luger Shiva Keshavan, cross-country skier Nadeem Iqbaland Alpine skier HimanshuThakur — had marched un-

der the Olympic flag at theopening ceremony but cannow carry their own stan-dard on February 23 when theGames come to an end.

“It’s like coming to theOlympics all over again sothis is the real one,” saidKeshavan.

“Unfortunately my eventis over but you know it is im-portant that India is back andall of us are very happy aboutthat. I hope something likethis doesn’t happen again inthe future,” Keshavan said af-ter the small ceremony thatalso included a few visitingIndian fans.

Two of the three athletes, including Keshavan, are cur-rently Olympic scholarshipholders.

Chennai: A visit to the capi-tal, which promised to helphim win an allyfor the Lok Sab-ha elections, turned out to bea huge disap-pointment foractor andDMDK chief Vijayakanth.

Snubbed by BJP presi-dent Rajnath Singh and fail-ing to extract much from hismeetings with Congressleaders, the actor returned toChennai on Sunday after atwo-day stay in New Delhi, virtually empty-handed.

While Vijayakanth’semissaries are said to haveheld talks with senior lead-ers of both the national par-ties, the BJP, apparentlymiffed by the DMDK leadersimultaneously trying to ne-gotiate with the Congress, turned down the actor’s re-quest for an appointmentwith Rajnath Singh, claim-ing that the party chief was“busy”.

Trichy: DMK chief M Karu-nanidhi on Sunday said hisparty will head a ‘progressivefront’ in Tamil Nadu for theLok Sabha election which willcomprise allies that shuncommunal forces and em-brace secular principles.

Addressing the party’sconvention here, Karunanid-hi gave enough indicationthat he was not averse to ac-commodating more parties ina DMK-led alliance. “Which-ever party accepts the condi-tions we lay down, they will bea part of this winning alli-ance led by DMK,” he said.Karunanidhi said partiesthat desire to be a part of theDMK-led alliance should alsoendorse its ideologies of so-cial justice and reservation ineducation and jobs.

Significant, however, wasKarunanidhi’s remark thatparties desiring to be a part ofthe DMK-led front should alsosupport the Sethusamudram

shipping canal project, theparty’s flagship scheme. Bybatting for the project andmaking support for it a pre-condition for potential allies,he might have been sendingout a signal for the inclusion ofCongress in a DMK-led forma-tion. The UPA governmenthas been a strong proponentof the Sethusamudram pro-ject, which has been stronglyopposed by BJP and AIADMKon environmental grounds.

Chennai: Calvin, from thecomic strip Calvin & Hobbes, took the words out of BillWatterson, his creator’smouth when he protested,“You can drag my body toschool, but my spirit refuses togo.”

While smidgens of thatsentiment will, most likely, al-ways remain in the student,

most of Chennai’s schools, both new and established, have worked out ways andmeans to turn out accom-plished, well-rounded individ-uals.

It’s always a hard decision, though, to choose the bestschool for your child. Shouldone focus on academics orsports? Arts or personality de-velopment? Liberal educationor life-oriented skills? Can weget a school that provides itall?

To assist in this search,The Times of India commis-sioned the country’s foremostmarket research group IMRBInternational to survey 170

schools in Chennai, and rankthem on the basis of five pa-rameters: academic perform-ance, infrastructure, teachingquality, sports facilities anduse of technology. The schoolswere graded by parents, teach-ers and alumni. The list of 170was drawn up by education ex-

perts and reporters. The par-ents, teachers and alumni didnot rank the schools to whichthey were linked — instead, they gave their perceptions ofthe facilities in other schools.

New Delhi: Uncertaintyhangs over the creation of Te-langana with Union ministerJairam Ramesh saying thegovernment should not pushthrough the contentious billin the midst of a din or with-out discussion.

Rural development minis-ter Ramesh told a news chan-

nel, “Such a far-reaching billshould be discussed and debat-ed in Parliament andshould not be pushedthrough in a cacophony orprotests of a violent na-ture that are taking placein Parliament.”

Coming a day ahead ofthe government’s likely at-tempt to seek a discussion onthe Telangana bill on Monday,

the comment raises questionsabout the fate of the bill should

the protests resurface inthe Lok Sabha. The lowerHouse was rocked by vio-lence when the bill wasintroduced on Thursday, leading to the suspen-sion of 16 Andhra Pra-

desh MPs cutting across partylines.

While a majority of the an-

ti-T contingent is out of LokSabha now, textiles minister KS Rao has indicated that thoseremaining would continue theprotests should the division ofAndhra Pradesh be taken up.

As many as eight anti-Te-langana MPs, including min-isters, are still in the House af-ter escaping suspension.
