August - these are supposed to be the dog days. But, as I write this, it is still
stinking hot, and I am getting aggravated, as the heat is keeping me off the
bike. I usually ride mine to work each day, but I don't really enjoy the ride in
the furnace. Maybe tomorrow.
July was a great month. It started out with a small group riding to Monterey,
California. We left in the heat, and saw the temperature drop 40 degrees as
we approached the coast. I actually had to use my heated grips for part of the
ride down the coast. Boy, was it ever worth it!!. We are so close here in
Las Vegas to such a great ride. You owe it to yourself to take advantage and
get to the coast - to ride up or down the West coast is amazing! See Larry's
article further in the newsletter.
In July, the LOH again held a
bowling event (which got us
out of the heat for awhile).
These bowling events sure are
fun and, in some cases, very
funny to see your fellow HOG
members doing something
other than riding. Also, we do
have some amazing bowlers
amongst us. This year, we
had a new Men's Champion -
Bob Orlando; and Sunshine,
again took the Woman's title.
Congratulations to both.
Also, the Windmill Ridge in
Alamo hosted us, and did a
fantastic job for a brunch ride.
Take the time to visit them
when you have a chance.
The first August ride is the
Road Captains choice. Plan
to be out all day. Make sure
you have gear to keep you
cool, and plenty of water.

We were going to do the Gunlock loop, but thought August was not the best month for this ride. Stay
tuned for this ride later in the year when it cools off a little.
The overnighter this month is to Torrey, Utah. Let's see if we can talk about this one for the next full
year. I am still hearing raves whenever the Torrey ride is mentioned. This should be one of the better
overnighters of the year. Please join as you are able.
We will be screaming for Ice Cream again this month— and, we will be going to Henderson this time. I
think any ride for Ice Cream is a good one, and a great way to beat the heat.
Later in the month, the LOH will be taking us around the Pahrump loop, with a stop for breakfast.
This month’s meet-n-eat will be at the Sun Coast Buffet.
Rounding out the month will be the New Members Ride, and a lunch ride to Boulder City.
On September 18th we will again manage the poker run for Desert Thunder. If you are able, please help
with this event. The San Bernardino County Sheriffs Office will donate a portion of the Poker Run to a
charity of our choosing.
Also note that Las Vegas Harley-Davidson is sponsoring a Poker Run for Lene and Mark Mogavero’s
grandson on Sunday, October 9th. The Poker Run will be called ―Benefit Ride for Robert‖. More details
next month.
Come to the meetings! Come to the events! Come out to the rides!
Matt Hamm The roads are endless, let’s go!!
You’ve heard it before from the Directors, Road Captains and other Officers throughout the years—We are so
fortunate to be in a Harley group that has the full support of our dealership. They are always helping us out—in
our events, meetings, points—they even cook for us sometimes. And yes, they are still giving us something for
riding with the group (see our new Points System—and it’s great!) While other Harley Dealerships either don’t
have a system like this or are discontinuing them because of the economic times, ours is going strong—and as far
as I’m concerned, they’ve made it better by using $$ coupons instead of points—making it much easier to know
what we have. Let’s face it folks—we have it made: we get to ride Harley’s, belong to a great group of other
Harley lovers, have a great dealership to sponsor us—and get free Harley stuff just for riding with our group!!!
(Wow—life is good!!!)
If you get a chance, say hi to Randy Compton at LVHD (who approves our newsletter); thank our Harley Rep,
Tom Pheln, who rides with us and thank and appreciate the managers and staff at both Harley-Davidson
locations that go out of their way each month to help us.

This was a 500-mile ride and with the summer weather in Las Vegas well over 100 degrees, we thought
we would be in for a long hot ride until we hit the coast. The ride to Baker was uneventful and the
weather was mild with little or no wind. For the next couple hundred miles, we just enjoyed more
good weather as we crossed through Barstow and into Bakersfield. Again, the weather was great and it
was just starting to get warm, but still very comfortable. We stopped at a Denny’s to have lunch and
some much needed refreshments. Everyone was in high spirits and the bikes were all running great.
Next, we were off toward Salinas by way of Paso Robles. Going through the mountains was great and
the weather was getting a lot warmer. The group was looking forward to getting into the coastal area
and hoping to find a lot cooler weather and seeing the Pacific Ocean. We rode into Salinas and went
through the city until we found the road to the coast. A short 15 miles later, we were looking at the
ocean as I forgot to make the turn to the hotel so we could all get a look at the beautiful ocean (AND
THAT’S MY STORY AND I’M STICKING TO IT!) We drove through the beach parking lot and headed a
couple blocks away to the Best Western in Marina.
We all checked into the hotel and then proceeded to go across the street to the Kula Ranch Island
Steakhouse. We all met on the terrace for drinks prior to dinner and most of us had to put on our coats
to brave the cooler weather. Here we were, after leaving the 100+ degree weather in Las Vegas, now
having dinner 500 miles later with our jackets on. The dinner was great and the company with
everyone was just as delightful. What a great group of riders we had for this trip.
On Sunday morning, we made a quick ride over to Monterey Harley-Davidson only to find out they
were closed. Only in California would they close when we are all out riding! A few quick thinkers
remembered there was a Harley apparel shop on Cannery Row in downtown Monterey, so we all
decided to head back toward the coast and visit the shop. Once everyone had some time to buy some
needed Harley gifts, we headed back to Highway 1, past the boats, divers and all the shoppers heading
toward Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row.

On Saturday, July 3, 2010, thirteen of us met
at the Silverton Hotel to start our 3-day
adventure to Northern California’s beautiful
coast. Kickstands were up at 7:00 am with
Karen as our Lead Road Captain, Rod
(Ducky) our Rear Road Captain and myself
as the Scout.
P A G E 4
As we headed south, Matt made sure that we stopped at a couple of bridges overlooking the Pacific
Ocean, took pictures and just enjoyed the incredible view of the coastline. As we continued down the
coast, the views and scenery just kept coming. Matt was able to find a restaurant on his GPS and we
stopped at the Redwood Grille. When we drove up, we met several fellow HOG members from the
Northern Nevada Chapter (Reno) and spent some time talking with them before lunch. As they left,
heading north and back to Reno, we sat down and had a nice lunch. This was a small restaurant, but the
food was good and we all got to talk about the wonderful ride along the coast we had just been on.
After lunch, we continued our ride down the coast toward Hearst Castle, San Simeon and stopped at
Cambria for gas. We decided to ride through town and let everyone enjoy our Harley’s as much as we
do. As we continued down the coast, people were out at the beach watching seals and possibly whales
from shore. We were now riding through more towns as we headed toward Pismo Beach and into
Arroyo Grande. We found our hotel around 5:00 pm and checked into the Best Western.
When we headed for dinner on our own that night, we thought about the great ride down Highway 1 to
Pismo Beach. This is some of the most scenic coast-line in the world and was well worth the drive. At
about 8:00 pm, fireworks started appearing around the various bay hotels and piers and they were pretty
good. At about 9:15 pm, a fireworks extravaganza started and lasted for the next 45 minutes and was
truly worth the wait.
On Monday morning, the weather was cool and some of us brought our cold gear and some of us did not.
Eight of us were heading back to Las Vegas that morning and the others were going to stay in California
to enjoy some other activities. We had a great ride back toward Highway 101 and yes, we could not
believe that, in July, the weather was this cold. We also knew what were riding back to and wanted to
enjoy a little of the cool air that was soon going to be lost to us.
We headed toward Lancaster Harley-Davidson for some rest, cool air and to buy some much needed
gifts. Once we left the dealership, we headed toward Victorville and lunch. After having a nice break,
we headed toward what we thought would be a simple ride back to Las Vegas with a stop in Baker.
Well, about 300,000 other people seemed to have the same idea and we had stop-and-go traffic all the
way back to Mountain Springs. The official ride ended at Jean with everyone saying goodbye after a
great 3-day ride and lots of time spent with our friends and new acquaintances. Over the course, we rode
over 1,100 miles and could not have thought of a better way to spend the holiday weekend - on the
Harley with great friends.

For those of you who have not made an overnighter, this
definitely was worth the time and I would encourage you to
consider going on the next trip with our SNHOG Chapter.
Special thanks to Matt for coordinating this wonderful ride
and for Karen and Ducky keeping us safe.

Robert Baldwin, Lead Road Captain, went over our 2-Second Rule. Please make sure when we are riding in a
group that you remain 2 seconds behind the person directly in front of you and 1 second behind the person to
the right or left of you. We have these rules for our rider safety. If you ride too close to riders in front of you,
then you are eliminating their alley to use for unforeseen events, and if you ride too far behind, then you leave
gaps for vehicles to fill and split the group up. Let’s all try to maintain a safe riding style. Robert announced
that Larry Preston has graduated from the Road Captain training program. Congratulations Larry!
Penny Hamm, Activities Officer, discussed the remaining July calendar. Our August calendar has changed a
bit. Our overnighter in August will be the much talked about trip to Torrey, Utah. Get your reservations in
now. August 1st Road Captains Choice Ride will be all day / 7a – 5p. The August 7th ride to Gunlock Loop
is cancelled - it’s just too hot for that ride.
Nancy DeViese, Ladies of Harley Officer talked about the Bowling event on July 10th. Bob Orlando won
Men’s High Score, Sunshine won Women’s High Score. Our Harley-Davidson dealership also donated money
for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. There was a great turn out for this event. The next LOH event in August will
be breakfast in Pahrump. Stay tuned for more details.
Matt then closed the meeting with an announcement for the Nations of Patriots ride. The flag is coming from
Kingman and will be here on Sunday, July 25, around 11:00 am. Please come to Las Vegas Harley-Davidson
for a presentation ceremony. Then at 9:00 a.m. on July 26, we will be taking the flag to Lancaster, CA. When
the flag has gone through all the states, it will be returned to Milwaukee in September.
Thunder on the Mountain
Brian Head, Utah (7/17/10)
By Larry Preston
Some came up Thursday, some on Friday and one on Saturday. A total of 5 Road Captains and 5 members
came for the gorgeous ride through Southern Utah and
the high mountains and cool temperatures.
We started out at Brian Head Ski Resorts Giant Steps
parking lot with a buffet break and began the poker run
at 9:30 am. The weather was cool and the sky was
mostly clear as we headed toward Cedar Breaks National Monument, then past Navajo Lake through
Duck Creek and on our way to the first stop at
Mammoth Creek.
After a brief stop and our first poker hand, we headed toward the Panguitch Lake Marina. The turn into the marina came up very fast and, after a slight overshot, we headed down the road to our second poker stop and some needed
refreshments.
We then followed Highway 143 to Highway 89 for an early gas stop in Panguitch. Somehow, one of our riders forgot to gas up prior to the ride. I am sure one of us would be willing to tell you who on the next ride. After
watching other riders having issues in the parking lot trying to get too many people in a small gas station, we headed
toward our next stop. We left the gas station and headed off toward Highway 12 on the way toward Bryce Canyon
and Ruby’s rest stop for our third poker stop. The mountains and valley’s leading into Bryce Canyon were so beautiful and breathtaking. We did go through a couple of arches on the way toward Ruby’s and on our way back to
our next stop. We joked with one of our riders about going through tunnels, but he didn’t mind once he saw they
were really arches and his heart rate returned to normal.
After a short stop at Ruby’s, we doubled back toward Panguitch for the fourth poker stop and lunch. The local Boy
Scouts served us a wonderful lunch and it was a nice break from the first 100 miles of the ride. The lunch was just
what we needed and the weather at Panguitch was getting a little warm, so we decided to head back to Brian Head and the end of the run.
The Road Captains heard that there was a possibility of rain ahead so, shortly after we left Panguitch, we stopped
and discussed whether or not to put our rain gear on. Deciding that the weather did not look so bad, we decided not
to rain gear up, and as luck would have it, it started raining 5 minutes after we left. The first rain storm was not too bad and lasted about 10 minutes. Our Lead Road Captain came over the radio and said that was not too bad and we
all felt good as we continued on. A few minutes later, the rain storm was back, along with hail, that lasted about 15
minutes. If you have ever had to ride through hail, it is not a pleasant experience and, from my personnel perspective, it hurt and I could not wait to get out of this rain and hail storm.
We got back to Brian Head for our last poker stop and I ended up having the highest hand for about 1 minute.
Speedo pulled the last card of the poker run and beat my hand by 3 points. As it turned out, Speedo ended up tying for the best hand and split the pot with another rider.
After a wonderful steak and chicken dinner, the organizers had set up three activities that included a slow ride, hot
dog grab and an obstacle course. It was a great sight to see about 400 bikes in the parking lot but, as luck would have it, the rain came back and they had to cancel the last event.
We ended up traveling about 150 miles on the poker run and I want to thank Speedo for leading the group and
Ducky for being the lead rear. This was another great ride and all but one of us stayed the night in Brian Head prior
to heading back to Las Vegas on Sunday.

Make Your Miles Count
The HOG® Mileage Program is beautiful in its simplicity—you ride, and we’ll reward you. We’ll even give you a pin and patch
for just signing up (registration is FREE). After that, additional pins, patches and motorcycle medallions will be awarded at
various intervals. Your first reward comes at just 1,000 miles (1,610km). Of course, there are some rules you’ll have to follow:
Only active HOG members (full, life, associates and associate life) may participate.
If you have more than one Harley®, you have to enroll each one, and only the mileage after you enroll will count towards your award.
You may participate as a rider, a passenger or both – just make sure you fill out a form for each.
And, your Enrollment Form (available at the Chapter meetings) and award submissions must be officially endorsed by an Authorized Harley Davidson® Dealership. However, it is still your responsibility to submit
them once they are endorsed.
So, what are you waiting for? Get enrolled in the program, enjoy riding with the Chapter, and reap the rewards for putting
enjoyable miles on your Harley.
As Road Captains, our primary concern is moving the group safely to and from its destination in a
safe, and enjoyable manner. We want everyone to have not only a great ride, but a safe ride as well.
As Road Captains, we are focused on safety issues and managing the group during the rides. As most
of you are aware, from time to time, we observe what we perceive to be potential safety issues with a
rider or the rider’s equipment. As Road Captains, we have a responsibility to keep the group safe, and
will, therefore, address these issues as they come up.
Last Fall, I wrote an article on riding in the rain, and on wet streets. A portion of the article dealt
briefly with tire tread depth, and displacement of water. I have elected to expand on the subject of
tires, and the importance of keeping a close watch on the tires on your motorcycle. Space for this
article does not permit an in-depth discussion of the importance, and features of tires manufactured for
our motorcycles. There are, however, a few common sense, easy to perform checks to make sure our
tires are going to perform safely while on the road.
We all have heard the cliché’s: ―keep the shiny side up‖ or ―keep the rubber on the road‖. If you stop
and think about it, each of these are not just sayings; but, should be a state of mind for any rider. The
two (or three) tires on your motorcycle are the only thing between you and the road surface, and you
should not neglect to check the tires regularly (before each ride). When was the last time you really did
perform an inspection of your tires? There are several simple steps you can take, relating to your tires,
to make your ride a safer one.

From the
Road Captains...
By Sam Mabry
Continued on next page
Greetings to all our Southern Nevada H.O.G. members.
I’m Sam, one of your Road Captains, and hope everyone is
having a great Summer of riding so far.
P A G E 1 2
From the Road Captains… continued
First of all, and most obvious, is to check your tire tread for depth. There are set standards for tire
tread depth within the motorcycle industry (refer to your owners manual), and you should know what
they are and pay attention to them. There are several good reasons to keep your tires from running
―bald‖. The traction between the tire and roadway help you maintain control of your motorcycle,
particularly when riding on wet street surfaces. Proper, safe tread depth will also help to prevent a
flat tire from an encounter with small pieces of glass or other road hazards - many of which are found
on our valley roadways. When checking the tire tread, also pay close attention to the surface of the
tire between the treads for cuts, splits, etc. caused by road hazards. A few months ago, I found a deep
cut on the front tire of my Ultra, probably from glass in the roadway, and replaced the tire
immediately.
It’s not worth risking tire failure, and serious injury to stretch a few more miles out of the tire. The
second easily managed task is to check the tire pressure regularly. Over or under inflated tires can
create a dangerous situation for the rider, and passenger. The tires and rims installed on most
motorcycles have been tested and designed to be safe on your ride. Failure to properly inflate them
can cause separation of the bead on the rim and cause a rapid loss of air from the tire and a flat. Tire
pressure is also extremely important in how much control you have over your motorcycle and its
response to normal maneuvers.
A third, and last item is checking for ―dry rot‖ on your tires. Dry rot can be present for a variety of
reasons: from heat, storage, lack of use, etc. If you see cracks in the sidewall of your tires, have them
checked out, and replaced if there are any questions regarding the amount or severity of dry rot.
Once again, trying to stretch the tire life a few more miles is not worth the risk of serious injury. I
have only touched on tire safety, and there are many sources of information available both from the
Harley-Davidson Dealers, and the tire manufacturers.
The main purpose of this article is to remind everyone that it is important to remember to check your
tires, as well as your lights, brakes, and other items on your bike. Those who ride with you in our
group will appreciate knowing that they are safe around you while riding. A good safety check of
your bike, including tires, can prevent injuries and
break-downs while on the road.
I want to thank all of you who support the
Chapter, Road Captains, and our sponsor,
Las Vegas Harley-Davidson/Red Rock
Harley-Davidson by attending the rides, and
assisting with dealer events. Let’s have a safe
summer, and continue to put some accident free
miles on the Harleys.
Ride Safe,
Sam Mabry

Remember
All Rides Are
Alcohol Free
As a Reminder... When you get around to sewing on your Chapter patches (see the back
page of the Silver Eagle News for sizes and prices from the SN H.O.G.
―Store‖)...remember that all three patches (your central H.O.G. patch and
SN Chapter and Las Vegas rockers SHOULD BE TOUCHING)...There’s
a reason...it’s to distinguish our patch from the ―three-patch‖ (or 1%
MCs)...and to abide by H.O.G. regulations for displaying your
Patch...wear it proudly...and correctly!!
EMAILS & WEBSITE!! We send out correspondence via email regarding future events. So, please keep us updated with your most current email address by sending it to
