A STUDY ON THE INFLUENCE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF IT ENABLED TOOLS (RFID) IN OPERATIONS WITH RESPECT TO MALAMPUZHA GARDEN, PALAKKAD
By :Maria M Loyola
Under the Guidance of Ramkrishnan.S
INTRODUCTION The study is conducted with the aim of
finding out the effectiveness of RFID technology in information flow in Malampuzha garden.
RFID means Radio Frequency Identification Device
Introduction of RFID – Late 1960s It is the latest auto identification technology
that leverages radio frequency signals to automatically spot, track and manage objects.
It provides an automatic way to collect data such as unique identification, location & transaction and time - quickly, accurately and easily without the need of direct contact/line of sight.
RFID system comprises : Tag, Reader and Antenna.
RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT
Implementation of any information technology tool in industry always shows teething troubles before it fully fledge the operations.
The human resources used for the purposes should be well trained and motivated
In Malampuzha –the operations such as the reluctance of the employees and lack of knowledge regarding the implementation usefulness tethered as major issue.
When rush occurs, it was very difficult to manage whole through Turn Steel gate.
Out of 3 gates, only one gate is working properly
Visitors are not satisfied with overall operation
Unawareness about the usage of card
Missing of RFID card/tag-keeping card in entry
Not using the full facility available there
OBJECTIVE Primary :
Find out the efficiency and effectiveness of RFID technology in the information flow w.r.t operation of the entire organization.
Secondary: To study the influence of RFID in monitoring the
flow of visitors
To analyze the effectiveness of information accuracy
To analyze the future perspective of the same
RESEARCH METHODOLOGYData Sources:
Primary data:Direct unstructured interview with the officials, company employees, visitors and technology heads in regards of the impact of new technology.
Secondary data:From company records, Internet, Journals, Magazines and Books.
POPULATION The visitors who came to visit Malampuzha
garden during the period of 2009 to 2013 July (4 years).
SAMPLE SIZE The number of incoming visitors of the period of
2009 to 2013 July.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE Convenient Sampling.
TOOLS FOR ANALYSIS The simple percentage analysis, interpreted
through pie charts and bar charts.
DATA TABULATIONANALYSIS OF TOTAL VISITORS IN THE YEARS 2009, 2012 & 2013
OVERALL DETAILS OF TOTAL VISITORS
SEASONAL DETAIL OF TOTAL VISITORS
ADULT VS CHILDREN DURING THE SURVEY
total adults 77%
total children 23%

DATA ANALYSIS
RFID Entrance Gate
Showing How Card Is Detected While Swapping
Long View Of RFID Entry And Exit Gate
Card Receiving After Entry Of Visitors
FINDINGS From the study it has been found that the usage
of RFID technology have created a major impact on the increase in the recording of number of visitors in Malampuzha gardens .
From the study it has been found that number of adults is more than children. Number of adults is 54% more than children
From the analysis it is found that as the number of adults is more that children the usage of Turn Steel Rod gate is not a problem
From the analysis it has been found that counting of incoming visitors is done through RFID more efficiently than the traditional method
From the observation it is found that by the usage of RFID technology ticketing was 75% faster than the traditional method
From the observation it is found that out of 3 entry gates only one is working properly. And exit gate is not at all using properly
From the enquiry it is found that unawareness of the usage of the RFID card by the visitors is creating a problem for the proper usage of the technology
From the unstructured interview with the officials it was found that small children & pregnant cannot be counted using turn steel rod gate (visitors with height below 3 feet )due to the power and height need to turn the rod
From the observation it is found that when rush occurs entry gate spacing is not sufficient to save time
SUGGESTIONS Provide information campaign on RFID systems to
raise awareness as to the likely benefits and possible risks of the wide-spread application of this technology. A debate should also be launched with a view for making the preferred and ethical use of the technology more explicit to all
Reduction of fine (as everyone can be affordable like 25 or 50) for missing of cards can be introduced.
Transfer the daily data to central system in office or to a particular mail. So that damage due to virus problem can be avoided to an extent.
At initial stages sending maintenance team to check the daily working will be more effective. In progress, it can be extended as checking once in a week, then once in a month.
Keeping old system for small children and pregnant ladies will be effective until automatic gate comes into existence
Presenting the importance of the technology to government and make proper funding
Posting one Electronic Engineer to control the whole system and providing proper training to all other employees who associated with the proper working of the system is highly necessary
Introduction of video examples for the usage of RFID card will be highly effective and knowledgeable for visitors
If one card to each person is provided, it is easy to monitor the movement of every person. This will provide security to garden
Giving one card to each employee, so that it can be used for attendance through which recording may be maintained easily is a practically added value method which can be implemented without cost
Buying less priced tags and doing trail for the two ways usage of RFID card will be effective. Even if card got missed it is affordable. If possible, starting a fine system alone with it is suggestible.
A proper warning for the missing of card through using announcements or display boards in the entry will be effective. Place temporary bile boards inside the garden to warn the visitors about the missing of card.
A small announcement in every 5 minutes through loudspeakers about the usage of RFID cards in minimum volume without disturbing the visitors will be an added advantage
Repairing of the 2 damaged gates is of much priority. Re-positioning the swap area from the side to top
of the gate is advisable through which time can be saved
To obtain centum percent efficiency the introduction of fully automatic gate will be beneficial
CONCLUSION It is substantiating the vast usage of RFID technology There is no doubt that organization can grow with the
use of the technology and its contribution to the next era The challenges and issues can be overcome Globalization is taking place and this only speed up the
process It is time to change and understand what is the impact of
RFID technology in effective and efficient information flow with respect to the operation of the entire organization
The most modern mantra for development is always technological advancement and the steps to such a new method always have teething troubles at first.
Once overcome, the technology can take the organization to a different level
In total RFID technology helps in effective information flow
