A Smart Prepaid Energy Metering System to Control

Electricity TheftBy

G SAI NARENDRA15011D5501

Abstract

• To control the electricity theft•Using GSM module in both sides• Easily recharge• To control meter bypassing and tampering• Legal actions against dishonest consumers

Introduction

• A huge amount of revenue lost• Electricity theft : tampering meter bypassing meter billing irregularities unpaid bills

Past methods to detect electricity theftNon technical methods periodic inspectionTechnical methods central observer meter harmonic generatorThese techniques require proper communication

Proposed Prepaid Metering System

•Provider-maintains server•Consumer-provided energy meter•Both contains GSM modem GSM module

Prototype of the proposed meter

Energy meter consists of

• Microcontroller(ATmega 32)• Energy measuring chip(ADE7751)• GSM module• MAX232• Current transformers• Potential transformers• LCD display• Relay

• Energy meter chip produces pulses•Pulses proportional to energy consumption•MC counts the output pulses• It uses AT commands to communicate with GSM•Battery backup is available•C language and MATLAB software used

• Recharging is similar to mobile recharge• User has to buy scratch card• Pin number send to server by sms• Then User gets energy units• Readings displayed on LCD• Automatically disconnects the load• Avoids irregularities• Ensures revenue collection

Measures for controlling electricity theft1.Shorting the phase line

Measures for controlling electricity theft2.Disconnecting the neutral line

Measures for controlling electricity theft3.whole meter bypassing

Measures for controlling electricity theft4.Using observer meter and harmonic generation

Measures for controlling electricity theft5.Tampering

conclusion

•GSM communication provides prepaid electricity consumption controls the theft electricity Immediate legal action ensuring revenue collection
