Wyndchimes A Publication by The Wyndcroft School
Summer 2017
A Message From
The Head of School
Dear Wyndcroft Community,
The end of the school year is a time of great celebration and
rejoicing. For some, the emphasis is on celebrating the end with
the promise of summer fun. For me, I look back on the year in
celebration of all that has been accomplished by faculty and
staff, parents, and our students, most especially the graduates
who look forward to the new beginnings of secondary school.
Through the lens of academic achievement, sportsmanship, and
service, our community has accomplished a great deal.
We have a saying that can be heard throughout the hallways:
“Wyndcroft students are the luckiest kids in the world!” This
Spring, I heard from a young man graduating from Dartmouth
(Ted Poatsy `09) who stated that it took him to this point in his
academic career (8 years after Wyndcroft), to realize how lucky
he really was and how much the experience at Wyndcroft
shaped his life. He asked with utmost sincerity to continue to
remind our students how lucky they are.
If you attended this year’s graduation ceremony, you saw
poised young people speak from their hearts thanking friends,
teachers, parents, and grandparents for their Wyndcroft experi-
ence. Here is just a snapshot of what they had to say:
“Wyndcroft has taught me so many things…..to try your best, to work hard,
and most importantly to always be true to yourself, are the lessons I will take
with me and cherish forever.” (IF)
“When reflecting on my time here at Wyndcroft, I am reminded of a ride on a
rollercoaster: there are ups and downs, and LOTS of unexpected twists and
turns, and unfortunately, before you know it the ride is over. No matter how
long that ride may have seemed…..it can’t compare to how fast it truly
goes.” (IB)
“…..middle school is the place to start doing important things. So, my fellow
classmates, please cherish all of the things we did here, and although we may
eventually forget the small details of our Wyndcroft careers, you will remember
the truly important memories.” (LF)
“In the face of sports tryouts, several projects due in one week, and the science
fair, I have stayed strong and done all my work well and with a smile. How-
ever, most of all, I recognize that this is not just my own doing, but that it was
done with the unending support of the teachers, friends, and family in my
life.” (AG)
“Leaving the place where memories were made behind is bittersweet, but leav-
ing the people who I made them with is even worse…..I have to end my 11
years here and thinking back on those 11 years, right now, in this moment, I
wish I hadn’t been trying to make it go by so fast.” (KL)
“What will I take with me from Wyndcroft? It’s how welcoming of others we
always were. Our class had a wide variety of kids, all with different talents
and interests, but we all stuck up for each other and stuck together. If only the
world was that way. I know I can’t change the entire world, but I can try to
bring that quality to the small piece of the world I do control.” (LM)
So as the academic year has come to its official close, our com-
munity has worked and studied, practiced and played, and
grown, both mentally and physically. Each year we are a little
more prepared to meet the challenges life will present; AND
we continue to celebrate that Wyndcroft students remain “the
luckiest kids in the world!”
Warmly,
Gail Wolter, Head of School

Year-End Traditions
Spring-time at Wyndcroft has many traditions that are enjoyed by our students. Here’s a glimpse at some of them.
Pre-Kindergarten Graduation
Each year Wyndcroft celebrates the transition of our Pre-
Kindergarteners in the Early Learning Center to Kindergarteners
in the main school building with a graduation ceremony. This
year ten students took part in this adorable tradition.
Field Day
For one day each year, Wyndcroft chooses sides: Blue vs. Gold.
Field Day for Grades 1-8 is held at the Hill School. This year, for
the first time in the modern-era, Field Day ended in a tie. Con-
gratulations to both colors!
Honors Day
Honors Day is held on the day before graduation each year, cele-
brating the academic acheivements of the Upper School. A few
special awards are given at this ceremony:
Jean B. Sawyer Award - Joy Booth-Genthe
Daughters of the American Revolution Medal - Kirsten Lange
WPTO Award for Scholastic Growth and Effort - Liam Merritt
In addition, this year Adam Georgopoulos was recognized for
earning a perfect score on the National Latin Exam.

Focus on Math and Science
Wyndcroft students love learning about Math and Science. This year, they were given many opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom to explore these subjects.
Science Fair
Wyndcroft seventh graders completed projects involving several
months of hard work when they presented their Science Fair
Projects to a panel of outside judges. The projects involved re-
searching a topic in a depth in one of several categories, designing
an experimental protocol to confirm or dismiss a hypothesis,
executing the protocol, and summarizing the total effort in a well
-written research paper. The students then created a traditional
"research poster" to summarize and display their results for a
panel of scientific judges who were not Wyndcroft faculty and
were not well-known to the students. The winners of the three
divisions are pictured above: Candice Medina (Consumer Sci-
ence), Nicholas Cicchetti (Physical Science) and Morgan
Kachmar (Life Science).
Math and Science Night
This year's Science Fair was a part of Family Math and Science
Night. Wyndcroft welcomed over 300 members of our commu-
nity to an evening filled with educational fun. Twelve stations
were set up around the auditorium and gymnasium, each with a
different theme. Guests were invited to visit each station
throughout the event. Thank you to Merck for the use of their
Star Lab.
Solar Sprint
Congratulations to 8th graders Noorie Dhingra and Allen Gift for
winning two awards at the Junior Solar Sprint competition in
Philadelphia. They won Second Place - Most Artistic and Third
Place - Best Use of Recycled Materials. This is the second year in
a row that this team has placed in the Solar Sprint Competition.
The Junior Solar Sprint program encourages students to be criti-
cal consumers of scientific information related to their everyday
lives and to be able to continue to learn about science.
Centered on engineering a solar electric model car, the JSS nur-
tures the innate curiosities of youth and provides an open forum
for 5th - 8th grade students to utilize science & math in a way
that will give real life meaning to lessons learned in the class-
room.
Math 24
The Wyndcroft School participated in its first Montgomery
County Math 24 competition on May 9-10 at the Montgomery
County Intermediate Unit building in Norristown. Math 24 is a
card game where students are challenged to be the first to use
four numbers to equal 24, using each number only once. Benefits
of playing Math 24 include:
Increased confidence in mental-math abilities
Improved focus
Practice remaining emotionally centered under pressure
Quickness in thinking
To get ready for the competition, students in grades 3-8 were
invited to participate in a weekly Math 24 after-school club. Af-
ter 4 weeks of qualifying rounds and a school competition, the
top 3 students in grades 4 & 5, grade 6, and from grades 7 & 8
were invited to represent the school in the county tournament.
In the 4th and 5th grade competition, Wyndcroft had 3 students
make the semi-final round, scoring in the top 12 overall. The 4th
and 5th grade team is pictured below.
Wyndcroft Unplugged
Ready, set, design… Picture a room filled with over 200 stu-
dents all actively engaged in design thinking activities: brain-
storming, problem solving, and collaborating to solve a chal-
lenge. It was an incredible, magical learning environment that
inspired students and faculty from kindergarten to 8th grade.
For five afternoons in March, Wyndcroft students unplugged
from their traditional classroom instruction to spend time partic-
ipating in design-thinking enrichment activities. Design Thinking
draws upon logic, imagination, intuition, and systemic reasoning,
to explore possibilities of what could be, and to create desired
outcomes that benefit the end user. A design mindset is not
problem-focused; its solution focused, and action oriented. It
involves both analysis and imagination. Incorporating skills in
science, technology, engineering, art, and math, students ex-
plored and created new designs for many challenges, culminating
with a balloon car race using cars designed by teams of students.

Class of 2015
Euan Forrest `15 has just finished his Sophomore year at Hill,
and is pleased to be a Varsity soccer captain next season.
Night of Champions
Once a year, the Wyndcroft community gathers to rec-
ognize the achievements of our student-athletes. At the
Night of Champions, held this year on Wednesday, May
31, coaches from all seven varsity sports, their teams
and family members enjoy a ceremony with Director of
Athletics, Ken Dorris. Each team presents four awards:
Most Valuable Player (MVP), Most Improved Player
(MIP), Rookie of the Year, and a special Coaches
Award.
The evening was especially significant as Wyndcroft cel-
ebrated two undefeated seasons: Field Hockey and Girls
Lacrosse.
