My experiences

Lessons learned

Pitfalls/challenges

Different types of leadership

Webster: the power or ability to lead other people

“ Leadership is solving problems. The day your soldiers stop bringing you problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence you can help, or concluded you do not care. Either is a case of failure of leadership.

General Colin Powell (Ret), Former US Secretary of State

Peacemaker

People open up to me

People come to me for solutions

It’s ok to help others look good

Hard work almost always gets recognized and rewarded

The more you dive in, the more you learn and if you’re successful with small responsibilities, you’re usually given larger responsibilities

Strive for fairness

Work as hard as everyone else

Represent your organization well

Know your role

Manage up

Follow the rules

Many leadership training opportunities are out there

Fill in gaps in your skill set

Promoting what you love

Creating consistent and fair environment

Advocating for your organization and its members

Helping bridge the gap between administration and the practicing physician

Maximizing physician satisfaction to maximize patient safety and organizational success

Try not to get outmaneuvered

Remember why you’re there and what matters

Don’t lead just to lead

Confront bias/mistreatment, but don’t overreact

You can learn from a good leader . . .

as well as from a bad one.

Question – can you be a doctor and not be a leader?

Leadership among peers

Leadership of health care teams

Leadership of patient physician relationship

Leadership of medical organizations

Leadership in the community

Find your skillset

Dream big and determine the steps to get you there
