This year we are embedding the Resilience Project throughout
the school; this includes staff and students. The Resilience
Project focuses on: Gratitude - paying attention to what you
have and not worrying about the things you do not have;
Empathy - understanding how other people feel and being
kind; and Mindfulness - being in the moment and feeling calm
and relaxed.
The diaries have a daily focus on one of these themes. I am
grateful that we have been able to return to some 'normality' in
our day-to-day curriculum and programs, and most
importantly, our lives. At Nathalia SC, we are known for our
community and pastoral focus and our welcoming, supportive
nature. We know that feeling a sense of belonging is critical for
students to flourish and learn.
Yesterday I asked staff to reflect on the positive interactions
they have with students and it brought a smile to my face to
hear how much joy each teacher got from engaging with your
children. Our staff want the best for all students and have set
clear expectations in regard to learning. The reflection showed
just how many positive, wonderful learning outcomes happen
in a day.
Every year the College prepares an Annual Implementation
Plan (AIP). This year our foci are:
Learning: improving literacy and numeracy outcomes
Wellbeing: mobilising resources to support student
wellbeing and mental health.
One of the strategies we are embedding is the use of data and
students in Year 7 – 10 have completed PAT testing and staff
use this data to understand where a student is on the learning
continuum and then plan to implement learning activities at
their point of need.
Improving attendance is a wellbeing goal. Ultimately, you need
to be at school to learn and to give yourself the best
opportunity to become a passionate and successful learner.
We have discovered that our attendance text messaging service
has not been working and this is fixed now. Families can expect
a text each morning if their child is away. Parents need to
respond with a reason why. If it is COVID related, please ensure
you follow the correct protocols. Remember students can
access work from their Google Classrooms if away.
Uniform
School council is keen to have a more active wear short and
pants. The SRC are looking at options. Stay tuned for updates.
CARING
Social Media: The College is re engaging with the eSmart
We value: Caring, Learning, Excellence, Accountability & Respect
Program to support students to make informed and safe choices
when using social media.
Our Live4life crew - Evan, Cassie, Taneya, Kiana and Amber - are
part of the Moira Shire Crew heading to Cobram on Wednesday
for an induction to Teen Mental Health First Aid training. As
part of the Crew, they will be organising several events that
focus on Year 8 mental health activities.
Last week the College held a Pride Group – LGBTQIA+, this was
an opportunity for students to meet and greet with Georgie
from the Diversity project in a safe and inclusive environment.
Lea, our School Nurse, made cupcakes and the students who
attended enjoyed the opportunity. Georgie will be visiting every
2nd Thursday, the next Pride Group will be the 10th March.
Lastly at the swim sports and badminton we have teams of
students supporting each other, with encouragement and
recognition of effort. Awesome to see.
LEARNING
Are you INVESTING IN YOURSELF? At Nathalia SC you have
amazing opportunities and support for you to grow and thrive as
a learner. How are you doing with this? Have a look at your SPA
score. To learn you need to have positive work habits your SPA
score should be 4 or above. Congratulations to the many
students who have achieved this. I look forward to lunch with
the high SPA score students. If you have not got 4 then ask why
not, work with your homeroom teacher and head of house to
identify an area of improvement.
EXCELLENCE
At our recent assembly we formally introduced the School
Leaders to the school community. Cody then took over running
the assembly and everyone I spoke to said how good it was to
have students running assemblies.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Mr Robinson reports the following re Commendations
Week 6 Commendation review
• 466 commendations given to students (as of P2 Friday 4th)
• Yr 8 received the most with 113
• Murray House received the most with 204. Well done everyone!
RESPECT
Every organisation has rules and expectations. We show respect
for these when we comply and follow the rules.
Simple things like getting to school on time, having your books
organised for class, taking your diary, going to class when the
bell rings, courteous of your peers and teachers so everyone can
learn.
Campfire Conversation
Nathalia Secondary College is hosting a campfire conversation
regarding Aboriginal self-determination in Education
A campfire is a place where everybody has a spot to sit; to
listen, share and connect with each other. It is a place for
storytelling and deep listening with the purpose of:
- Providing Koorie people opportunities to define self-
determination in education,
- Exploring possibilities for how self-determination could and
should look in education,
- Building & strengthening partnerships between Koorie
communities and schools,
- Developing a range of changes to improve agency and success
for Koorie people in schools, and
- Highlighting the benefits of self-determination for the whole
school community.
We are looking forward to this occasion and have sent home
invitations to our Koorie families.

You may remember in Volume 1 of the Newsletter we publicised Ally &
Kiana’s project of revamping the old canteen sign. The sign has now
been finished, and with the help of a few classmates, it has been
installed & looks fantastic! This has been a great team effort which
shows the students taking pride in the appearance of their school and
will be enjoyed by many students to come. Well done Team!

On Thursday February 24th, the Diversi-ty Project commenced their fortnightly visits to NSC. The aim of our partner-ship with Diversity is to support the LBGTQIA+ community and facilitate a culture of safety, support, inclusivity, and tolerance, both at school and in the wider community. We welcomed Georgie Poort from Diversity Uniting to launch our Pride Group and it was so amazing to see how many students came along to show their support and enthusiasm. And there were cupcakes for the win, too!
Parent PD: Gaming - Turning it into a positive experience Session Description Our children get a lot out of video games. And when you understand how your child games, how gaming can be good for them and how your child can avoid gaming downsides, it can be good for your relationship too. Come along and hear about just how prevalent gaming is, and how to support your child to make gam-ing a beneficial hobby and to turn the tussle over gaming time on its head. Location Online event access details will be provided by the event organiser Sessions
