ALMASRY ALYOUM HOMEPAGE REDESIGN

Team: Ayaat Elhabal @ayaat_elhabbal Mohamed Hosam @mohoworks Ahmed saber @samrtic1985

Conceptualization

The real challenge is to keep our users motivated. So we will change the concept of normal news websites to make it updatable website with some new tools to raise the interaction of our users with the website.

The current design

THE CHANGE

The website will be divided into 3 sections

Highlights: We will merge the most important news and highlighted news.

Latest news: The latest news will be a live updatable feed with reach types of content.

Types of content.(News)

Types of content.(Video)

Types of content.(Photo sets)

Types of content.(Discussions)

Types of content.(Charts)

Fixed: This part will contain non changeable data like opinion article, ads blocks and sticky posts like photos, videos and caricature.

DEVELOPMENT

• In ALMASRY ALYOUM we are using drupal, so we will create a drupal custom module to act as an engine for live updates.

• The live feed will depend on requesting a json file contains the updates.

• For performance issues, the request of the update file will be every 30 to 60 sec based in the peak time in the news room.

What makes the difference in user engagement?

1-Keeping the user updated with latest news. 2-Allowing the user to filter what kind of news he interested in. 3-Adding new post types like “Naqeshny (discussions and debate)” , and charts will give us more tools to reach the content. 4-The user will be updated with all new videos and photos instead of navigating to the multimedia section on our website. 5-In the current version of the website the homepage updated every 5 min because of caching and performance while in the new version we will keep the cache while the update will pass it so; the web site is always up-to-date. 6-Attracting people with trending articles like what is the most active articles now on twitter and Facebook.
