Time to planfitness regime

IT is January again. How are all thosenew year resolutions going? Fitness isfor life not just for January. Workingout at the gym every day for a coupleof weeks is just not going to cut it.

OK, so January is a good time to getstarted on your new exercise regimebut how do you stick to it? Rememberhow great you feel after activity and ifyou eat right. Miss breakfast, eatloads of processed fatty foods, grazeon sweets and crisps and you aregoing to feel like rubbish. Time to putin a fitness plan for life and yes, someof you will also have a desire to getthin and lose weight.

Simone told me that she isdetermined to get fit this year and‘s k i n ny ’. She has been an on/offexerciser for a few years. Simone toldme that generally in January she feelsa bit negative and can’t be bothered todo very much. She really wants tohave a healthy lifestyle and knowsthat getting fit will make her feelbetter about herself.

At school she took part in lots ofsports and was active pretty muchevery day. When she moved to the UKfrom South Africa she ‘lost it’. She gotout of the routine of sport and fitness. She told me: “I did not like how Ilooked and did not feel comfortable inmy own body”. Since then she hasmade the decision to do somethingabout it.

Simone had been very active, andpartly due to her body type, was reallysmall. She told me that for her, herperfect body image is skinny.

“I do not like not being able to getinto clothes,” she added. “I need totone up and loose inches. I go to thegym as often as I can. I also find thatclasses work really well for me. I likeworking as part of a group. It must besomething to do with being used toteam sports.

“It is great having someone tellingme what to do – and dancing aroundto music is enjoyable and I can seeresults. Having an active partnerhelps as does working in anorganisation where everyone is intoexercise. It is easy to find excuses toget out of going to the gym but I knowI feel so much better after. I like to seere s u l t s. ”

I asked Simone about her diet? Shetold me: “Snacking is my biggestdownfall – crisps and savoury foods. Itry to have fruit instead but I don’twant it to be too much like hard work.If you cut out everything you like andare ultra-strict it can be like goingcold turkey.”

And I would agree cutting out foodgroups and counting calories canmake you want what you think youc a n’t have even more.

Food is a friend – you need it to fuelup, especially if you exercise.

Enjoy a balanced diet and havinggood health and fitness will make youfeel great – even in January!

My way tostay in fashion

THERE is a saying in the world ofhairdressing that “h a i rd re s s e r sattract clients like themselves”.

Now I’m not saying it is alwaystrue, but interestingly enough, most ofmy clients are witty, intelligent, creative and fun and often inclinedtowards lateral thinking!

It was along these lines that aslightly surreal conversationhappened with a client of mine lastwe e k .

It started because she was tellingme that she was hoping to convince afriend of hers to come to me soon, because she had been wearing thesame hairstyle for the last 30 yearsand she thought the only way to gether to change it was to get her to anew salon.

This idea, although theoreticallygood for me, is a shame, becausereally, your hairdresser should keepyou up to date, whatever your age orpersonal style, because fashion can betweaked and personalised for you, without being outrageous, unsuitableor unmanageable.

So it shouldn’t be necessary tochange salons in order to changes t y l e s.

Even if you wear an all time classic, like the bob for example, it has gonethrough many incarnations duringmy hairdressing career alone, fromone length to layered, to graduated, tocurly, to flat, to bouncy and mostrecently to tapered, so if you are stillwearing yours so it looks like it wasturned under with rollers, you’dbetter get an update quick.

The problem is that some people arereally resistant to change, they can’tsee themselves as others see them orthey haven’t noticed fashionschanging around them, or maybeboth, added to a little bit of fear!

My client felt that her friend wassuffering from a bit of all of those, sothat was when our conversationstarted heading down the genuinelysurreal path. We were trying to deviseways of getting her to come in for achat. I suggested they met in ourreception for a shopping trip, then Iwould surprise her. She thoughtmaybe it would be necessary tokidnap her! I thought one of my giftvouchers might do the trick, she gavea cynical chuckle. Then we came upwith a whole new, bigger idea

A eureka moment, a flash ofinspiration! We invented The LivingHair Will. You just sign it when youare young and bold, then when thetime comes that you’ve lost thefashion plot, your executors, one ofwhom is an accredited hair stylist, would decide what you were having.Sorted! Too late for her friend though, going to have to stick with thekidnapping trick......or maybe I cantalk her into that gift voucher idea!
