Before the high school all-stars
from Monmouth and Ocean
counties battle for supremacy at
the Shore Conference Lacrosse
Coaches Association All-Star
Game on June 19 at Long
Branch, fans will get a
chance to see a group of
players who may one
day be a part of the high school
all-star game tradition.
For the scecond time, there
will be a youth all-star game held
before the high school game, and it will
feature top fifth/sixth graders and
seventh/eighth graders. from the two
countiesquaring off at 4:00 p.m. for the
5/6 graders & 5:00pm for the 7/8
graders at Long Branch High School. It
will be a glimpse of the future stars in
the Shore Conference and a look at the youth
levels that have greatly contributed to the sport’s
rapid growth in this area.

players in this area are being recognized. These
are going to be the stars of the future. You see
the growth of lacrosse all across the country and
finally these kids are getting the opportunity to
showcase
how
much the sport has grown in Monmouth County
and Ocean County. This is a great platform to
showcase their talents.’’
The connection between the youth and high
school all-star games is a reflection of what
happens at most programs around the Shore
Conference, where high school players often
still help out at the youth levels, and college
players come back to their alma maters and help
the high school players whenever possible.
“We instill that about guys coming back,’’
said Roland Gagne, a youth coach in Jackson
who will be coaching the Ocean County eighth
grade all-stars. “The high school guys know our
(youth) practice is always open. On Monday, we
had practice for this all-star team and we had
the two leading scorers from Jackson Memorial
and a Jackson alum who is now at Montclair
State there to work out with the kids. That's not
just indicative of our program, but all
programs.’’
“Coaches are always saying to give back,’’
Gagne said. “It’s a communal program where
you're constantly giving back, sharing ideas,
and raising the level of the sport. I think that’s
why in Monmouth and Ocean County, the sport
is exploding, because of that tradition and the
uniqueness of it.’’
In addition to giving fans a look at the future
stars of the Shore Conference and emphasizing
the connection between the youth and high
school levels, the game provides the young
players with a great atmosphere to showcase
their talents on a big stage in front of a good-
sized crowd. They get to play on the big
artificial turf field at Long Branch with their
high school counterparts and their coaches
checking out who the next stars will be that they
will have to compete with.

Manalapan not only won its first NJSIAA
Group IV title in school history on June 11, it
accomplished the feat in a performance that
was the baseball equivalent of watching
Halley's Comet zoom past with Bigfoot standing
next to you and the Loch Ness Monster
swimming by.
"The lineup today was the perfect storm,'' said
head coach Brian Boyce, still shaking his head
after the game. "I'm at a loss for words because
I'll never see it again in my coaching career.''
"This will never happen again,'' said senior
pitcher/outfielder Jake Winston, who had a
career-high five hits in the win. "It couldn't have
come at a better time.''
The Braves put on an offensive display that is
believed to have never been seen before in the
history of the Group finals, which date back to
1959. To say that it was like batting practice
would be a huge compliment to Manalapan's
batting practices, which probably have never
gone as well as what unfolded on Saturday.
Manalapan won 29-14 over Westfield and
pounded out 32 hits off six different pitchers at
Ken Frank Stadium at Toms River South, which
are believed to be records for runs and hits in a
Group final. They turned a state championship
into a game that couldn't even be simulated on MLB 2K11
on PlayStation. The final line of 29 32 0 on the scoreboard
looked like the combination to one of the Braves' lockers
at school, and it was so surreal that several of them kept
glancing over at it during postgame interviews to reassure
themselves that it really happened.
Not only did they make school history, they did it in a
way that will never be forgotten. Fans and reporters will
see that score in 10 years and think it's a typo. There's no
way that could be right. It made Seneca's 24-14 win over
Moorestown in the South Jersey Group III final look like a
pitchers' duel, and that was in a sectional championship,
not a Group final between two of the top teams in the state.
Even players who had waited their whole lives to gush
about winning a state championship were rendered
speechless as they tried to comprehend the
enormity of what was detailed in electronic form
just beyond the rightfield fence.
"I'm at a loss for words,'' said senior outfielder
Nick Kreiger. "I don't even know what to say
when I look at that.''
They scored one run for every victory they
recorded in setting the school record this season,
and they outscored 11 of the football teams that
won NJSIAA sectional titles this past fall.
Every starter had at least two hits, including
five each by Winston, senior catcher Chris
Baird and senior outfielder Alex DeCastro, and the
Braves registered nine doubles and four home runs.
When senior outfielder Derek Kawa said afterward that
"it was one hell of a ride and ending my high school career
with a state championship is the best feeling in the world,''
it was hard to tell if he was talking about the season or the
game.
"Thirty-two hits, 29 runs - that's ridiculous,'' Kawa said.
"I don't know what everyone ate for breakfast this
morning, but it was going on all cylinders,'' said
undefeated senior ace Kyle Rubbinaccio, who had
arguably the worst outing of his career, and it barely
registered a blip on the radar because of the offensive
onslaught.
At first it didn't even look like the game would make it
past five innings, as Manalapan had leads of 11-1 and 16-
6, but Westfield exploded for seven runs with two outs in
the bottom of the fifth inning to avoid the mercy rule. The
Blue Devils had stormed all the way back to 16-13, but
that only served to fire up the Manalapan offense even
more. Instead of making Manalapan freeze up with its lead
evaporating, Westfield's seven-run rally turned out to have
the opposite effect - it turned what would have been a
potential run-of-the-mill, mercy-rule win into something
that had never been seen in a Group final.
"Once one guy gets going, we all go,'' said senior
shortstop Rich Ricciardi.
It got so nuts during the top of the seventh that even the
Braves reached the point of fatigue from all the nonstop
action. It was as if the offense was a giant wrecking ball,
trying to see if it could knock down the Toms River South
school building behind the outfield fence by shelling it
with baseballs.
"There's almost a point in the last inning where you're
like, 'Let's just make this final out, and just go back on the
field and win it,''' said Kreiger, who slammed his first and
only homer of the season during that 12-run surge. "I think
29 was a little much, but I'll take it.''
It was as if all the pressure the Braves have been under
since being ranked No. 1 in the Shore in the preseason
erupted in an offensive barrage for the ages. Despite the
fact that Manalapan had never even won a sectional title in
its history before this season, the talented, senior-laden
Braves were expected to deliver the school's first Group IV
title and become the first Shore Conference team since
Toms River East in 2001 to take the Group IV crown.
"Anything other than this was a disappointment,''
Rubbinaccio said.
The most impressive part, other than the Bugs Bunny-
type statistics, was Manalapan's resilience.
Every time Westfield made a charge, the Braves
had an answer. Manalapan led 11-1, but a grand
slam helped Westfield cut it to 11-6. Manalapan
quickly answered with five runs to make it 16-6
before Westfield put up seven runs in the fifth.
All Manalapan did was then drop a 12-run anvil
right on Westfield's back in the seventh to make
the scoreboard operators start searching for
extra bulbs.
"We didn't stop because we knew they could
hit,'' Boyce said.
When the smoke finally cleared and Winston
induced a hard line drive out to third base to
start the celebration, the Braves could finally
marvel at a hitting display never seen on this
type of stage.
"We are going to be remembered for this,''
Winston.
Glancing at the scoreboard one last time after
the game, the understated Baird, who homered in the win,
shrugged his shoulders with a wry grin when asked if he
was ever involved in even a Little League game that
resembled Saturday's affair.
"Hey, there's a first time for everything,'' Baird said
before smiling.
It turns out he was only half right.
Considering what Manalapan did on Saturday, it may
have been the first and last time that anything like that
will be seen again.
