In September 1963, 18-year-old Robert Pierce and 17-year-old Drunell Thomas became the first two African American students to attend Valdosta State College. This critical moment in the institution’s history has paved the way for diversity and cultural appreciation. Today, more than 50 nationalities are represented at Valdosta State University. The celebration began with a Heritage Community Cookout in Palms Quad. Hosted by the Langdale College of Business Administration, the event included a joint proclamation from the City of Valdosta and Lowndes County Board of Commissioners. Later that evening, a student sponsored event titled, A Look 50 Years Back, and 50 Years Forward Kickoff Reception took place in the Bailey Science Center Auditorium.
