5 SURE SHOT WAYS TO SLEEP

“COOL”!

How many of you have a different set of bed sheets for

the summer and a different one for the winter?

Not too many, I am guessing.

Here is a look at why it is a good practice to have a

different set to suit sultry summer conditions.

When selecting sheets to drape on the bed this

summer keep the following things in mind:

Fabric

Pick natural fibers. Avoid the satins, silks and

synthetic blends for sure!

Cottons, bamboo, linens and some cotton blends work

best because of their absorbent property (and yes, we

do sweat even when asleep!).

Natural fibers also have a cooling property.

While some may argue that silk is also a natural fiber

and has better regulating properties, the downside of

buying silk is its high price and maintenance.

Also, silk wraps close to your body and thus traps heat.

Nothing feels as good as a crisp cotton sheet on a hot

and humid day.

Oh, and try to buy cotton that has not been prewashed

with resin, since that would decrease absorbency!

Color

It is a scientific fact that dark colors absorb and light

colors reflect.

The obvious choice then is to go for all shades light

and pastel.

Not only do they look good and make you feel less

hot.

Bothered, they also absorb less of the bright warm

light in the room the whole day.

I personally love hanging my sheets out to dry on a

line in the bright sunshine.

The sheet absorbs that outdoorsy, summery smell

and retains it for a while.

Thread Count

Yes, Egyptian Cotton sheets feel like bliss. But don’t

you get caught up in the thread count of a sheet!

In fact, the higher the thread counts the tighter the

weave and thus lesser the air that can flow between

fibers.

If a sheet passes the feels-so-good test, pick it up.

Recommended counts are anywhere between 250

and 450 counts.

Prints

Small prints, pleasant patterns and pretty colors

look tempting on a hot day.

Loud prints equal noise and thus cause an uneasy

feeling.

Stick to prints that calm you, that don’t have too

much happening!

Imagine a white sheet with pretty pink rosettes

scattered delicately around versus a white sheet with

a lot of abstract swirls in a multitude of colors.

Remember, a cool mind is also important, so don’t

introduce any elements that mess with the

equilibrium of your mind and emotions!

Wash Care

We need to change and wash our sheets more

regularly during summer, even if we are in an air-

conditioned room (we sweat in our sleep

remember?).

Buy sheets that are easy to wash, iron and use.

An added bonus of buying light colored sheets is their

easy maintenance – they can easily be bleached.

Stay cool; sleep well!
