A bout 20 years ago several people with great vision saw the need to have a world-class facility to host Georgia’s junior livestock programs. Junior programs had been having shows in Macon at the old State Fairgrounds to hold the state market hog show, the Coliseum in Athens to host the state
steer show and the old World War two airfield in Moultrie to host the state heifer show. Leading the charge in this endeavor was Dr. M.K. ‘Curly’ Cook, who was then Head of Extension Animal Science at UGA. Several prominent legislators, including the late Sam McGill of Washington and the late Henry Reaves of Quitman, got Governor Joe Frank Harris to appoint a larger committee to select a site in Georgia for such a facility.
After several months of visiting potential sites a flat cow pasture in Perry, right off I-75 was selected. Thirty million dollars was appropriated by the General Assembly of Georgia and work began and finished several years later when the Georgia National Fairgrounds and AgriCenter was completed and dedicated in 1991.
This magnificent facility inspired Georgians involved in the livestock industry, including county extension agents, agricultural education teachers and livestock producers the challenge to build one of the nation’s outstanding junior livestock programs. The facility was now here, where all shows could be held during the same week involving all species of livestock. Thus the Georgia National Junior Livestock Show was born.
With this great facility now in place, junior livestock exhibitors now wanted to “go to Perry “ and interest and growth in the junior livestock program began at a phenomenonal rate. This growth also inspired Georgia’s livestock producers to breed exceptional livestock in all species to provide junior exhibitors ‘show quality animals’.
One of the modern and earliest club calf producers in Georgia was Don Griffith of Haralson County, owner of G-Whiz farms. G-Whiz, with it’s famous slogan, “we breed’em--you feed’em “ philosophy frequently talked about starting a club calf producers association in Georgia. However, there wasn’t enough interest at the time to stimulate interest in an association. However, because Don brought this to many people’s attention interest started to grow. Unfortunately, because of Don’s untimely death he did not see what would transpire in a few years.
Many people wanted to start a club calf producers association in Georgia in the late 1990’s and encouraged Billy Moss, who was then the Area Livestock Teacher for Agricultural Education, now retired, to send letters to potential members and plan a meeting during the junior shows in Perry. In February, 1997, the first organizational meeting was held in the Beef/Dairy Arena. A total of 19 people were in attendance. There was a great deal of interest from those who attended and they decided to start an association that would be named the Georgia Club Calf Producers Association and would be referred to as GCCPA. Billy Moss was asked to send letters again to potential members and those who paid their $35 membership dues by the Futurity, which was held on July 25, 1997 would be official charter members of the association. It was hoped that this Association would one day have 30 members.
At the Futurity, during the Opening Ceremony, conducted by Billy Moss and Dr. Robert Stewart, it was announced that there were 49 paid members, and all would be recognized hereafter as charter members of

GCCPA and all would always have an asterisk by their names in official membership lists. These members were :
Stephen Ashmore, James Aultman, Clifford Bailey, Leonard Barrett, Michael Berry, Greg Bowman, Kenneth Bridges, Dan Brown, John Callaway, Andy & Joy Carter, Bill Casey, Kurt Childers, Randy Daniel, Joe Darby, Phil Gentry, Chris Goldman, Joe Griffith, Robert Harkins, Clay & Candi Harrell, Jason Johns, Chipper Jones, Cape Jones, Marvin Jones, Steve Jordan, Billy Jowers, Johnny Marchant, Hugh McBride Family, Mike McCravy, Ronald Metts, Stacy Miller, Billy Moss, Neal & Wes Pace, J.L. Paulk, Jonathan Perry, Louie Perry, Laura & Scott Johnson, Rob Postin, Stone Shirley, Jody Smith, Kevin Sullivan, Stan Tankersley, James Vickers, Greg Walker, Shel Ward, Jason Weaver, Joe Wells, Mike Wheeler, Rick Wood and Bobby, Lillian & Lynn Youngblood.
On August 23, 1997, all GCCPA members were invited to a meeting at the Georgia Cattleman’s building in Macon to establish committees and elect officers. Eighteen people showed up on a Saturday morning for this purpose. Excitement was in the air as the nuts and bolts was discussed that would guide GCCPA into the future.
Those present at this meeting were : Billy Moss, Steve Ashmore, Stan Tankersley, Chris Goldman, Wes Pace, Neal Pace, Stacy Miller, Jason Weaver, Cape Jones, Marvin Jones, Jody Smith, Andy Carter, Kurt Childers, Clay Harrell, Candi Harrell, Joe Wells, Randy Daniel and Rob Postin.
Randy Daniel had served as Nominating Committee Chairman and recommended the following as the first officers of GCCPA : John Callaway as President ( who couldn’t attend the meeting because of a lamb show in Haralson County ), Stacy Miller, Vice-President and Billy Moss as Secretary/Treasurer. Board of Directors nominated and approved were : Cliff Bailey, Joe Wells, Rob Postin and Neal Pace. Cliff Bailey would work on the Rules and By-Laws, which were later approved, and would govern the way GCCPA operates into the future.
Other items discussed were the official point system which was developed after the very successful Texas Club Calf Producers Association, which was designed by Billy Rash, a high school ag teacher in Texas. Over the next few years the GCCPA point system was tweaked so it would fit the ever-changing junior program in Georgia, which later included showing steers by breed. Dues for the association was set at $35 and ear tags would cost $20 each. Dues would operate the association and funds generated by ear-tags would provide for awards. GCCPA also was different from other club calf associations in the country because it would not only recognize junior winners but also adult breeders who bred the many winners.
After several years of providing quarterly newsletters Billy Moss decided that we needed a high-profile name for the newsletters. He asked members for their in-put. Many suggestions were made. THE SHOWBARN was officially adopted as the publication for GCCPA. Moss would write in a future SHOWBARN that the name was chosen because “when visitors come to your farm to see cattle you don’t meet them at the mailbox or under the oak tree but at the barn”, thus THE SHOWBARN was officially adopted.
After serving as Secretary/Treasurer for eight years Billy Moss would give up that job. Holly Alford was hired by the Board to carry on the GCCPA mission. Besides her many duties Holly has also established a high-profile Breeder’s Directory that is outstanding.
The future looks bright as the junior program remains strong and is the envoy of all the surrounding states.
GCCPA, one of the few club calf associations in America, has made a difference in Georgia’s junior livestock program because of the many people, to numerous to mention, who have served with their time and energy and provided guidance that will fit well into future generations of show enthusiasts.

Cover PhotosCoinciding with the four seasons The Showbarn can be visited year round. The photos on the cover
are of an antique barn sat back in the hills of northwest Georgia’s
Crow Valley. This barn sets on the property of George and Ruth Hill (Holly Alford’s grandparents) and
is believed to be near a century old. In tribute to the Hill family, it is the
honor of GCCPA to have such a symbol of history on its cover.

Nutrition and Show Calveswritten by Brian Lance
When people think of showing calves, it is usually of blue ribbons, early mornings at shows and lots of rinsing and blowing. All of these take hard work, determination, and knowledge. But some showmen, myself included, have at some point in time gotten carried away by the newest thing in the show world, rinsing and blowing hair to no end, or making sure they are clipped right. But true cattlemen and women do not get caught up by these events.
A true cattle person knows to start with the basics. If a calf will eat, more than likely, the calf will stay healthier, grow, and look better than a calf that does not eat. Well, all of us know that right? Of course. But rinsing feed pans, making sure the area where they eat is clean (meaning no manure next to the feed pan), and fresh feed and water will give that calf every advantage to lick the bottom of the feed pan.
Now, on to the stuff everyone disagrees on. What should be in that bag? Some say just get a bag of something and throw it in front of the calves. Others think that if it is the most expensive, it’s got to be good. Both of the arguments, and everything in between have truth to them. But a good cattleman will know their calf, work with their feed company to understand the feed, work with their agent, teacher or parent to make sure they are feeding the right amount based on the calf’s condition and stage of development, and provide a balanced ration that will work for their calf and situation. There is no secret to feeding calves. What works for one person and calf may not work for someone else. Just find the right combination and run with it.
With that said, there are some building blocks to start with. Younger calves starting off need to be started carefully on feed and slowly built up to full feed. Make sure to ask the person you purchased the calf from what their feeding program is. If there needs to be a transition to another feed, do so over a week’s time to not upset the calf’s digestion and cause scours. As the calf grows, feeding 2-3% of their body weight will get most of the calves, but as I said earlier, know your calf. Some calves might need more, some less. Heifers may tend to get fat, add fiber such as cottonseed hulls, beet pulp, or oats. If steers need more cover, add corn. As I said, there is no silver bullet to feeding calves. Also, remember to provide hay, which is a must for rumination. A clean, fresh, abundant water supply is an absolute necessity. The best ration in the world would do no good with dirty water. Just find what works for you and develop a program with the help of experienced cattlemen.
On the subject of feed supplements, there are thousands out there all touting they are the best. Whether you should decide to use them or not, start with the basics. Make sure the ration is balanced and if you even need supplements. Think about what you are trying to accomplish with the supplement and the calf before using them. These are just some thoughts about feeding show cattle. If I can be of any help to you please let me know.
