Town’s reliance on Atticus to shoot Tim Johnson demonstrates Atticus’s courage which will be tested in Part 2. ***

Missionary tea: The women feel sorry for the Mrunas who are pagans. Yet, they have no compassion for the (Christian) African Americans in their own town.

Hitler and the Jews: Ms. Gates and the students discuss the horrors happeneing to the Jews at the hands of the Nazis. Yet, Ms. Gates, @ the trial said it was about time “they” were taught their place.

How do these ironies help Lee illustrate her theme of having respect for other human beings?

Mockingbird: an American bird famous for its singing and its ability to imitate the sounds of other birds. They help man by eating insects and weeding seeds.

Finch: family of seed-eaters. Many sing beautifully.

Robin: friendly birds; like to live in open areas, near people. Few birds have more dignity and beauty, or a lovelier song. ***

The Legend of the European Mockingbird

• It’s called a pious bird and• It has a scarlet breast b/c, according to

legend, it picked a thorn from the crown of Christ as he was on his way to Calvary. A drop of blood fell onto its breast, dying it red.

• The robin showed compassion and mercy.

• Tom Robinson helped Mayella out of compassion for her.
