Essential Question

• How can technology be used as a tool for Learning?

• “When the focus becomes the learning, not what the uses of the tools are, then you are going to transform education.”

Bernajean Porter

Our ongoing questions

• How can student performance be improved and enhanced by the integration of technology?

• How can students demonstrate learning and understanding through the use of technology in performance based assessment?

What if our students became so involved in learning that -

Keeping the ? at the center

What is Information Literacy?

The ability to ~• Find

• Evaluate• Use

• Effectively• Efficiently• Ethically

What do students (and we ourselves) do to find

information?• Google, Ask, MSN• Look through text

book• Ask a friend or a

teacher or the librarian for the ‘correct’ answer

• Google, Ask, MSN, others

• Search other resources

• E-mail or ask the librarian or other teachers

• Use our textbooks

What we’d like our students to do with information

• Compare and contrast• Make informed decisions• Come to conclusions• Put together to form integrated intelligent

answers to problems

How do we do this?• In the ocean of Web data, Web search

engines are [usually] the primary way to access content… Web data, however, is always evolving. The number of Web sites continues to grow rapidly and there are currently more than 20 billion indexed pages. Ricardo Baeza-Yates, Carlos Castillo, Flavio Junqueira, Vassilis Plachouras and Fabrizio SilvestriThis invited paper will be presented at In ICDE [International Conference on Data Engineering] in April, 2007
