Football and Safety
There has never been a better, safer time to be playing football
1. We (trainers, doctors, coaches) know more about diagnosing and
treating concussions than ever before.
2. Doctors and researchers are still learning more about the brain and
CTE. Researchers have now discovered subjects who were non-
football players with no history of concussions yet have developed CTE
(Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy).
3. Equipment continues to evolve and improve.
4. Rules are continually being studied, adapted, created, and changed to
create a safer environment and a safer game. Attitudes and actions
that were once glorified in the game are being changed to make players
more aware of protecting the game, teammates, opponents, and
themselves.
Football and Safety
5. Fundamental techniques are being coached much differently today
than even 5 years ago.
a. Hawk tackle / Roll Tackle
b. Near shoulder tackle
c. Profile tackle
d. Tip of the Spear Contact System
e. B.L.A.S.T Leverage Fundamentals
(Base, Long, Ascend, Square, Triangulate)
6. We are practicing much different than we did just a few years ago.
a. Limited contact (post-season, summer, pre-season,
in-season rules)
b. 2-a-day rules and limits
c. Choice of drills and teaching progressions
d. Learning to teach blocking & tackling fundamentals
without pads or helmets

participate in any of these activities:

Vacations, Jobs, Conflicts
If you are in town, you should attend the strength training, conditioning, OFDs assigned as scheduled. Attending a camp or being away w/ family is acceptable. Expectation is to work jobs and other conflicts around football
We encourage multi-sport athletic participation.
We understand multi-sport athletes will occasionally miss a football workout or activity because of a conflict in another sport.
• We expect coaches of other sports to understand the multi-sport athlete
may miss something because of football occasionally, especially since
football is the upcoming sport season.
• Communication is key. V/JV players expected to contact position coach
