Executive Director’s MessageOver the past year, the importance of self-care has been reinforced for me. I’ve learned that adequately implementing self-care is an ongoing process but as long as I am paying attention and deliberately working to improve, I am still in the game. I hope you are working on your self-care as well. Our social environment is not always easy on us so it’s up to each of us to find ways to boost our own wellness.
In 2018, Mental Health America of Hawaii focused on exactly that – finding ways to help individuals and groups to better take care of themselves and each other. It was a year of growth in this area. We launched several new initiatives:
• Kokua Life – the first Hawaii-based suicide prevention mobile app, which includes a searchable version of our updated Finding Help Human Services Statewide Directory.
• Live in the Na‘au (@livenaau) – an Instagram campaign offering wellness and self-care tips.
• Be a Defender – our new suicide and bullying prevention curriculum for 5th grade students.
In encouraging self-care, we aim to decrease stigma around the topic of mental health. We also increased our public awareness and communication activities including partnering with NAMI Hawaii on their annual state conference, holding a teen suicide prevention forum on the “13 Reasons Why” phenomenon featuring national speaker Paul Gionfriddo and coordinating our first Mental Health Awareness Day at the State Capitol. We also reconvened the state Mental Health Task Force, a public advocacy group co-chaired with Representative John Mizuno.
Working with our partners and allies, we are building momentum to raise the profile of mental health as a public health priority for our elected officials and the community.
All of this is possible because of the community we belong to and the stellar support of our donors and funders. Whether you contribute through a direct donation, a foundation grant, or purchasing a ticket to one of our events, our donors are what makes us viable and able to continue our work. Our growth in 2018 has been possible because of your continued trust and investment in us.
Thank you for your encouragement, engagement, and for your roles in nurturing your own wellness and the well-being of those around you.
With Aloha,
Trisha KajimuraExecutive Director
