Submarine Design and Support
The SEA 1000 project poses a
complex chal lenge for the
development of a modern and
potent submarine capability that provides a replacement for the
COLLINS Class.
BMT Defence Services in the UK
has established a strong reputation
as a leading independent centre of
excellence in submarine platform
design and in-service support.
With reach back to these skills and
experience, BMT Design & Technology can illustrate key
submarine design drivers, and
develop submarine options that
balance capability needs with
affordability, programme and
project assumptions. In this way
BMT can assist its customers to
procure new, capable and cost-
effective submarines, and to assure that they will operate safely at sea
through life.
Two concepts, developed by BMT
for future submarine capability, are
expressed through the SSGT high
mobility and Vidar-36 multi-mission
designs.
Support to Future Projects
Developed by BMT Defence
Services in consultation with Rolls-
Royce, the SSGT represents a
family of non-nuclear submarines able to approach the mobility of
SSNs whi ls t re ta in ing the
advantages of the SSK.
The Vidar-36 is a large conventional
submarine design offering multiple-
mission capabilities hosted in an
ocean-going platform with an
emphasis on risk reduction and
affordability.
Warship Design and Support
The SEA 1180 and SEA 5000
projects elicit requirements for a
fleet of next generation combatants,
with advanced capabilities and
flexibility for multi-role operations in
an a f fordable and loca l ly
supportable manner. BMT's SSGT concept for a high mobility gas turbine powered submarine.

Integrating the experience of our
sister companies with our local in-
service platform design change
along with acquisition and through life support experience, BMT Design
& Technology can facilitate the
introduction of new and novel
technologies for the design of
modern warships. Combining belief
in the importance of applied
research with strength in practical
naval architecture and engineering,
BMT can contribute to all stages of
the development of a new warship.
The Venator and F5 concept designs
illustrate BMT’s capacity for warship
support and through life analysis.
The Venator concept developed by
BMT Defence Services outlines the
design of a modular multi role
surface combatant capable of mine
countermeasure and support, hydrographic and maritime security
operations.
The innovat ive F5 concept,
developed by BMT Defence
Services and BMT Nigel Gee, forms
the basis for a family of future
warships that provide high
deployment speed, flexibility, and
the potential to swing rapidly
between roles.
Auxiliary Vessel Design and Support
Through the SEA 1654 and JP 2048
projects, the Government has
expressed a need fo r a
replacement modern double-hulled
replenishment ship and fleet of 6
heavy landing ships respectively.
Combining the knowledge and capabilities of our naval architects,
engineers and consultants, BMT
Design & Technology brings to
bear a wide range of experience in
the design of auxiliary vessels from
small boats and landing craft to
fleet tankers. Along with the
flexibility to develop solutions to
meet both naval and commercial classification rules, BMT have
developed an understanding
through practical experience of the
safety and environmental regulatory
frameworks under which auxiliaries
must be certified and operated.
BMTs aux i l i a r y concep t s ,
represented by the Aegir family of
replenishment ships, along with the
Fast Landing Craft, illustrate a
range of design options for modern
ships
The Aegir design family offers
nav ies an env i ronmenta l l y
responsible, affordable and low-risk replenishment at sea capability in
purpose-designed, new-build
vessels. Aegir is designed as a cost
-effective alternative to the
acquisition and conversion of an
existing commercial tanker.
