In 2012, Boeing used employee teams to initiate infrastructure, scheduling, and process improvements to allow an older office building (over 500,000 sq.ft.) to achieve Energy Star certification.
The 2012 Boeing Earth Day Fair attracted about 2600 employees, 50 green organizations or outside businesses, and 82 invited middle school students.
The Missouri Recycling Association awarded Boeing its Outstanding Business Recycling and Waste Reduction Award, for raising the recycling rate from 13% in 2007 to 53% in 2011.
INNOVATIONS
Converted an aluminum treatment process to a different chemical, which produces less hazardous sludge and once spent, can be reused directly by another industry.
Converted another machine cooling system to closed-loop in 2012, saving 1.8 million gallons of water a year.
Boeing led a broad industry effort that won approval for the use of cleaner, sustainable biofuels in commercial and military aviation. Since 2011, airlines have used biofuels on more than 1,500 passenger flights, and military customers have approved their use on multiple aircraft. These innovative fuels are derived from plants and other biomass sources that do not adversely affect food and water supplies or impede valuable land use, and they significantly reduce net carbon dioxide output
MINIMAL WASTE WORKSITES PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Developed and analyzed waste stream inventory for packaging and construction waste involved in solar installations.
Replaced construction site dumpsters with single stream recycling bins. Partnered with STL Composting to re-purpose wooden shipping bins and
pallets into mulch. Expanded program from initial test sites to become standard operating
procedure for all Brightergy solar installs state-wide.
INNOVATIONS
Reduced waste 100% while simultaneously reducing worksite dumpster rental and pickup costs by 50%.
Spread the word about the importance of minimal waste work streams through internal communication, bin stickers, and a social media series.
Diverted 360 lbs. of waste from landfills for every 25 kW solar install, resulting in 11,880 lbs. of waste diverted for Parkway Schools alone.

As a tenant in the third year of the Green Business Challenge most of the “low hanging fruit” has been discovered and implemented. The BMcD St. Louis office decided to engage the employee-owners with a series of sustainability themed awareness campaigns. Emails and postings on the intranet site described how people can make a difference in the office and at home in the areas of energy efficiency, water savings, transportation, recycling, and waste reduction.
Single stream recycling efficiency has been increased to the point that nearly any non-food item can be recycled.
Trash cans have been removed from individual workstations and are now only located in common areas such as break rooms.
The office is exploring the possibility of installing solar panels to cover most of the roof.

Jacobs has a fully integrated WeCar by Enterprise on site at their downtown St. Louis location. Employees are able to reserve the fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicle online for local business purposes, for as little as an hour or for the full day.
Registering for the WeCar program also gives employees access to the fleet of cars available on the streets of St. Louis for personal use, in addition to the exclusive Jacobs car.
INNOVATIONS
Jacobs management sent WeCar fact sheets to employees via email, invited representatives from Enterprise to host a training session, and encouraged staff to register and carpool to project sites in the WeCar as an alternative to taking their own vehicles.
.
“Anything that’s new or different can be a little scary the first time you try it, but the WeCar program is so simple! Use it once, you’re an expert. It’s safe, it’s efficient, it’s environmentally considerate. It’s just a slam dunk!”

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
ACCOMPLISHMENTS • 16 local food establishments on Washington Avenue, between 9th & 14th Street are parcipang in a 2-year pilot organics recycling program, tled Project Compost. • The primary goal of Project Compost is to divert over 3000 tons of organic waste from our local landfill. • There are noced improvements in alley and street condions downtown, due to increased recycling efforts by program parcipants. • By composng spent waste from these establishments and supplying the compost to local farmers and purchasers, we help to increase produce yields for St. Louis.
INNOVATIONS • 88% of the parcipang food establishments are now recycling their organic waste, thanks to Project Compost. • Upon compleon of Project Compost’s 2 year pilot, we will encourage these establishments to further the process independently.
Working together, we can realize the Downtown Next vision of “a vibrant, regional hub offering an authenc Downtown experience for residents, employees and visitors.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Through Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN), SWIC received nearly $1.9 million in Trade Adjustment Act grants. The funding will expand several Technical Education programs through new machinery, technology, curriculum and improved facilities.
The college implemented sustainability in new employee orientation, new student orientation, the student planner, the catalog and ED 101 classes.
Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon and President Georgia Costello, Ph.D., signed the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact for reaching the bronze level and striving for silver.
Technical Ed instructors and students converted a gasoline-powered dune buggy to one powered by a bank of lithium ion electrical batteries.
INNOVATIONS
The college offered several green classes this past year (23 credit and six noncredit in spring; 18 credit and 2 noncredit in fall).
SWIC currently has ten water refill stations located throughout the campuses, which has saved more than 75,000 water bottles from being used.
The Physical Plant diverted over 6.3 tons of steel to a recycling plant from a major piping and boiler retrofit project, as well as replaced more than 2,000 light fixtures to reduce energy by over 85,000 kWh.
“At SWIC, sustainability is a part of our core values. We are integrating it across our campuses and in the courses we teach.” - Director of Sustainability Karen Stallman
