Healthcare, an increasing burdenHealthcare budgets are under unyielding pressures primarily arising from ageing populations and the increasing prevalence of chronic disease. q80% of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancer can be prevented by better lifestyle choices — exercise, diet, smoking
q44% of patients did not receive recommended preventive treatments, such as cholesterol treatment, because they did not present in the early stages of their illness
qPatients with a single chronic condition are more expensive to treat than those without, by a factor of 2 – this factor rises to 14 for those with five or more chronic conditions
q50% of patients do not effectively adhere to their post-discharge care management plans, leading to increases in cost of care by a factor of between 2 and 4 (http://apps.who.int/medicinedocs/en/d/Js4883e/6.2.html)
q15% of health spending is directed at primary healthcare in the USA, about half of that spent in other developed nations
3
Care closer to home and telehealth
Health care providers must become more engaged with populations at a lower cost. At least 7% of the entire healthcare budget can be saved by the use of efficient primary care solutions, underpinned by high-tech ITC.
qPatient data: Patient information is often scattered among various physician offices and hospitals, leading to an increased chance of repeated tests, medical errors and lower quality of care.
qPatient engagement: Usually, the only meaningful engagements with health systems by patients occurs in person when they are unwell, and the opportunity to preserve wellness has passed.
qCollaborative care: Decisions are often taken by carers in sequential consultations, often without full information. This leads to later, less effective diagnosis and decisions, as well as errors.
qData analytics: Patient data is rarely exploited for its predictive qualities, missing an opportunity risk stratify healthy and ill persons alike.
4
The innovation mandateDriven to provide better patient experiences while reducing costs, healthcare organizations need to innovate.
Innovate patient experiences
• Patients want access to providers in new ways, including online chat (49%) and texting (45%). – PricewaterhouseCoopers, 2013
Innovate to drive provider productivity
• On average, physicians use 2.7 devices above and beyond their multiuser workstations. -IDC Health Insights, 2013
Cloud and mobility technologies are driving innovation and streamlining care
• 83% of healthcare organizations are using cloud-based apps. - 2014 HIMSS Analytics Cloud Survey
Enable – high quality care – lower costs– promote healthy populations of engaged citizens
Improve – health– well-being of communities
