The Definition of a Literary Work M. Abdessalami

A literary work can be defined as a branch of literaturedealing with words as raw material to create a picture, anidea or a story in a meaningful pattern.

Yet words, being thebackbone of the pattern, are not really of great importance ifthey aren't carefully manipulated into good syntacticallystructur

ed sentences so as to convey the target idea in anartistic way. By this it is meant that the work is valued aswork of art with a literary style which is, of course, different

from that we use in colloquy. The literary work is two types, either a creativewriting or the study of what is written. Writing is a creativework that values man as a

creator and raises his existenceabove the world of subsistence, but that work we call "study"is the way (by which) another literate person sees andanalyses the

work in question. The literary work, as a work ofart, can be a drama, a fiction, essays, biography orjournalism and so on. Sometimes the author deals with animaginary world

such as in drama, novels and poetry. As far as the design and the language are concerned, the literary work is written into two different ways

dependingon the use of language, so it's either in prose or in poetry.First, prose is a piece of creative writing. Itslanguage is not in verse form, but it has a similar valueespecially

when words are well used in a highly levelledtechnique. The literary work in prose is sometimes long as innovels, sometimes short as in essays and short

stories. Theprose writer, or the author, uses different kinds of sentences,long declarative sentences, short ones, questions, exclamatorysentences and so on;

frequently supported by a stream ofconsciousness in order to clarify the required idea or

displays the inner psychic of one of the characters in a novel, for instance, through long winding void of punctuationutterances. As he deals with fiction, the author

reliesessentially on imagination to depict a society as he sees itor as it ought to be, or describes the sides which peopledon't usually know or care much about in

a specificsociety .Also to make the reader aware of what goes on in thesociety; thus reality is not absent after all. Moreover, prosewriting can

include the author's own experiences as in anautobiography or other's lives as in a biography.Poetry, on the other hand, is a piece of "prose"writing in an elevated style. Its

characteristic is that it iswritten in verse form to express deep feelings or noblethought in beautiful language, composed with the desire tocommunicate an

experience. Unlike prose, a poem is built in arhythmic way so that it can penetrate far inside the consciouslevels of thought and feelings, invigorating every

word inorder to use it to express a specific meaning rather than itsusual or general one. The poet uses syllables, diverse kindsof feet and stanzas, as well as rhymes so that he

reaches thelevel of those who incarnate the divine messages. In additionto that, poetry relies most on the power of words. And thanksto his well exploitation of

powerful expressive words, thepoet produces a beautiful tableau we eventually call a poem. The poet also writes stories, parables, and many otherliterary genres

because poetry is a huge recipient for allimaginative writings. Poetry, being in a sense the mostliterary of all branches of literature, makes the greatest useof the

raw material, notably words, simile, metaphor etc. Thus be it in prose or in poetic style, the literarywork provides us with enjoyments and

intellectual delight. Itgives opportunities to know much more about life. It tackles

behaviours, dreams andso on and so forth. All in all literary work is reallyexciting to read but not always good to take for example.Choice is sometimes

compulsory to avoid those writings aboutvices: killing, robbery to name only two. Well-read people onthe other hand have a critical eye and they deal with literaryworks

in terms of importance. To put it short, a literary work is a relate part ofhuman experiences, civilisations and evolution. And by readingor better

analysing a masterpiece, one widens his scope andknowledge about people in terms of their thoughts, their wayof looking at different issues,

their experiences, and theirbeliefs in general!Activity (28)FiltersAdd to collection Review Add Note Like
