BEYOND PLANET EARTH
The Moon
The moon moves from east to west across the sky in an arc.
The Moon
The moon has an elliptical orbit, and revolves around the Earth.
The Moon The moon appears largest when it is
closest to Earth and smallest when it is farthest away from Earth.
Tides Tides are caused by the gravitational pull
of the Moon and the Sun on the oceans of Earth.
Tides More extreme tides occur when the earth,
moon and sun are in a straight line.
Tides Less extreme tides occur when the earth,
moon and sun are at right angles.
Moon Phases
Really are the part of the lit side of the moon that we see
Moon Phases
1. New Moon- no lit part can be seen
Moon Phases
2. Waxing- lit to the right, lit side growing.
Moon Phases
3. Full Moon- all is lit
Moon Phases
4. Waning- dark to the right, lit side shrinking.
Moon Phases
The phase is a crescent when less than half appears lit and called gibbous when more than half appears lit.
