Seaborne Assault
• 2am on 19th of February1945 that firing started
• Nearly 110,000 Marines sailed on about 880 ships
• 30,000 Marines would be on shore by night fall, followed by 40,000 that night
• After the quick fall of the Philippians the Japanese had a lull to try and build up defenses
• They used their time to build tunnels system , bunkers, and other island defenses using Sulfur to mix concrete
• They also relied on they Kamikaze tactics make the US think twice about landing an assault on Japan
Japanese defenses
Death Toll • This was the only conflict that the casualty
rate (deaths and injured) was higher in US forces than in Japanese.
• UUS Casualty toll 25,851 of which 6,825 were deaths (nearly ¼ of all Marines killed in WWII died in this one Battle)
• TThe Japanese held to their Kamikaze tactics to rigidly that of the estimated 22,000 Japanese soldiers on the Iwo Jima only 216 survived.
• Ledged has it that Secretary of the Navy
James Foresttal wanted the flag as a souvenir
• COL Chandler Johnson spat and said “to heck with that it belongs to the battalion.”
7th Bond Tour
• This poster was plastered in about1.5 million work places.
• The tour raised $26.3 billion; toput in perspective the entire national budget for 1946 was $56 billion
