This project is a collection of information and video clips that present the basics of the Visual Phonics: See the Sound program which is implemented in Fairwood Preschool to promote literacy development and speech skills. The project was formed as a visual aide to use at one of our many Family Nights, which is a resource that provides parents of our deaf and hard of hearing students the opportunity to meet other parents, interact with the teachers, and learn about various issues including Audiology, Behavior Management, and a Parent Panel (an opportunity to meet deaf adults and parents of older deaf children). This particular presentation was developed for Visual Phonics Family Night to familiarize parents/relatives of the handshapes, symbols, and sounds the students use so parents can understand the program and its benefits.

Visual Phonics

See the Sound

What is Visual Phonics?

• Visual Phonics is a system that associates each sound in our language with a hand signal and a graphic symbol.

• Visual Phonics was originally designed for individuals who could not hear the sounds of our language. It offers kinesthetic sensations to help develop oral motor awareness and sound-letter awareness for your child.

Who can benefit from Visual Phonics? EVERYONE!!!

• Visual Phonics was originally developed for deaf children.

It can also be used by:

• people who are learning English as a second language.

• individuals who need help developing speech or auditory discrimination skills

• those developing basic reading and writing skills
