March 2016
Welcome to the new electronic version of our Grapevine. In an effort to reduce costs (paper and postage) and reduce the environmental impacts of paper printing, we’re spending this year trying new distribution methods for our monthly newsletter, The Grapevine. We sent our February Grapevine out the old-fashioned way and we will probably send the Grapevine out via traditional mail a few times a year. In between, we will be distributing the Grapevine through our e-mail list. Those who’ve requested hard-copies will have them mailed to them. We will also have extra hard-copies available at church for folks to pick up. In the meantime, please continue to check out our other communication mediums: Our Sunday worship bulletins, our Facebook page, the St. Matthew’s website, and check your e-mail inbox for our weekly newsletters and special announcements. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to our newest vestry members John Owens, Dawn O’Polka, and Penny Paolo. In addition, we are thrilled to welcome back Bill Jones as Warden. Their positive energy, strong leadership and great ideas are a wonderful addition to an already enthusiastic group of vestry members! We look forward to an exciting year for St. Matthew’s!

PARISH DIRECTORY PICTURES Here’s the link to the directory pictures: http://cbarrusphotography.zenfolio.com/f680457080 (password: Grapevine1) If you would like to view them via an app on your phone, the link is: http://cbarrusphotography.zenfolio.com/f680457080/2032506316/appstart.html It is set so that you can download and even order, if you choose. How you see the image is how it will print. You can do a quick check cropping once you have the item in your cart. If you haven’t had your picture taken because you don’t want it online, let us know! Cindy can only put it there when she prints them and then take it off soon after. Cindy has had a few comments/requests for a book to order. One will be put together after we have the majority (so far, we only have a little more than half of the congregation) and we’ll let you know details later. If you wish to submit your own photo for the photo directory, we can do that too! Please email it to Sarah in the office at stmatthews_office@verizon.net ******************************************************************************************

***************************************************************************** FISH DINNERS
A Beloved St. Matthew’s Tradition Continues!
We have fish dinners planned for Friday nights during Lent: February 12th, 19th, 26th and March 4th, 11th, 18th, from 4:30 – 6:30pm. The prices for dinner are:
$11.00 for a dinner $10.00 for senior (over 65) dinner
$6.00 for children (6 and under) Plan on bringing your family and friends to this yummy feast!
Want to help? We can find a place for you!
Every week, volunteers from our parish set and clear tables during the meal, make desserts, run the “cash register,” serve the food, and man the beverage and dessert stations. Helping out is great fun and a nice way to get to know some of the folks here at St. Matthew’s. Look for sign-up sheets posted near the kitchen. We hope to not wear out our repeat volunteers, so new volunteers are always appreciated. Following each fish dinner, Stations of the Cross will be held in the sanctuary at 6:30pm. *****************************************************************************
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Please consider volunteering your time during our fish dinners, Open Table meal, or other community meals and events that we have at St. Matthew’s. We have a group of very dedicated volunteers who work very hard, but they cannot do it alone. We do not want to wear them out! Many hands make light work, so please consider giving of your time. Thank you!
Stations of the Cross
Join us for this special devotion as we prayerfully follow the final steps in Jesus’ earthly life
Friday Evenings in Lent (February 12, 19, 26, March 4, 11, 18)
6:30 pm During the late Middle Ages, when the Turkish occupation of the Holy Land prevented pilgrims from visiting its sacred sites, the faithful made a custom of making simple replicas of those sacred sites in Europe, where they could come to pray. Medieval Christians sought more details about the Passion of the Lord, beyond what was provided by the succinct stories of the gospels. They turned to the writings of the mystics and the apocryphal gospels for more information about the last hours of Jesus. From these sources came the meeting of Jesus and his Mother, the story of Veronica, and the various falls of Jesus, that became part of the Stations of the Cross. One of the most popular of these "pilgrimages at home" was to pray the stations of the cross, which were erected in imitation of the stations (or stopping places of prayer) on the street in Jerusalem that led from the judgment hall of Pilate to Calvary. Please join us in meditation as we follow Christ's journey from Gabbatha (the stone pavement) where Jesus was condemned, to Golgotha (skull hill) where He was crucified and onward to His resurrection.

You have all made “Clinnie’s Corner” a huge success, and we thank you! Please continue to look for the tables set up at coffee hour and also special gatherings. As you all know we have some very talented folks here at St. Matthew's, our Mother Carrie among them! They are contributing their beautiful items to create the "shop". The proceeds of all sales will go to support the Samaritan Center. So look for necklaces by Mother Carrie, cards by Laurel, and jewelry and other items by Penny and more to come! All items will be set up in the parish hall!
We are always looking for new crafters, so please feel free to donate your items as well!
