RAIN
COMES TOGETHER…..
Feb. 9, 1964. A Sunday night that would change the course of popular music, popular culture -
and history, forever! Millions of Americans tuned into The Ed Sullivan Show to watch a group
of four mop-topped Englishmen in dark suits who called themselves The Beatles. What they
witnessed was a new and exciting brand of melodic, guitar-and-harmonies-driven rock 'n' roll
that was as infectious as it was original and unique. Little did the members of RAIN know that
they would themselves come together in a band, forging a career that would keep them together
longer than The Beatles! All this while raising the bar for professionalism and preserving the
legacy of the immortal band's recorded music on stage to wildly enthusiastic audiences.
Spanning the generations, their audiences include the vast majority of older fans who never got
to see The Beatles perform live, and fans who were not yet born when The Beatles hit America.
The story of RAIN actually begins in the mid 1970s when keyboardist Mark Lewis joined forces
with four other local musicians who together formed the band that was originally called “Reign”
and played throughout the Los Angeles/Orange County, CA area. With their mutual love for the
music of The Beatles, Reign was in demand to play Beatles music and rode an enormous wave of
nostalgia for the band that had broken up in 1970. Before long they had built a strong devoted
following in and around Los Angeles. Following numerous misspellings in the media and
advertising, “Reign” became RAIN (also the title of a 1966 Beatles single). A big break came for
RAIN when Dick Clark hired them to record the music for the 1979 made-for-TV movie Birth of
the Beatles.
RAIN‟s intention was not just to cover Beatle songs, but to take it to a new level. To do songs
that The Beatles had never performed live, and do them note-for-note, just like the records. At
this time, „tribute bands‟ were non-existent.
Since the 1980s, for the five longtime band members – Joey Curatolo (vocals, bass, guitar,
piano), Joe Bithorn (vocals, lead guitar, guitar synthesizer), Ralph Castelli (vocals, drums,
percussion), the addition of Steve Landes (vocals, guitar, piano, harmonica) in 1998 – all of
whom performed in the hit Broadway and touring productions of Beatlemania - and Mark
Lewis, RAIN‟s founding member (keyboards, percussion), the music is first and foremost. For
more than two decades, RAIN has distinguished itself by focusing on details, always being
faithful to The Beatles with the ultimate goal of delivering a perfect note-for-note performance.
All the music is performed live, with no pre-recorded tapes or sequences. They approach The
Beatles music with the same respect a classical musician treats classical music. They worked
hard for many years, studying each song, each note, movement and nuance…both vocally and
musically. Today, they have a repertoire of over 200 Beatle songs. The members of RAIN are
extraordinarily talented musicians in their own right and this becomes more evident with each
show they do. RAIN audiences experience their own personal journey back to a time when Peace
and Love was everyone‟s mantra
It‟s difficult to believe that it has been more than four decades since The Beatles first came to
America and that two of our beloved idols left us too soon. Equally hard to believe is the fact
that this band whose music touched so many millions of people around the world was only
experienced live in concert by very few. Their final concert tour was in 1966, long before the
release of many of their classic albums such as “Sgt. Pepper,” “The White Album” and “Abbey
Road.” This left a tremendous void in the music world and concert halls which now has been
filled by RAIN.

The Beatles
The Beatles are considered by many to be the most influential musical act of the 20
th
century. The four young boys from Liverpool, England had no idea had that their music would
remain popular throughout the years and their band would be an icon in modern culture. John,
Paul, George, and Ringo each brought wonderful talent and artistic scope to the band that
conquered the world through their music.
The band originated from another band called Quarry Men that was composed up of a
teenage John Lennon and friends from school. Later a friend of Lennon‟s introduced him to Paul
McCartney, who asked if he could join the band. The two were exceptional song writers. A
friend of McCartney‟s soon joined; his ability to read music was essential to the group since
neither Lennon nor McCartney were able to. That person was George Harrison. In 1960 the
band changed their name to the Silver Beetles. They played at clubs in Hamburg, Germany until
Harrison was deported back to Liverpool for being underage.
On February 9, 1961 the band finally debuted as the Beatles at the Cavern in England.
They returned to Hamburg and continued to play at clubs. On January 1, 1962 the Beatles
recorded 14 songs for a demo for Decca Records but did not pass the initial audition. However
later on they did release music through Decca Records. On July 6, 1962 the Beatles signed a
recording contract with EMI Records, and in August Ringo Starr became the Beatles drummer.
Before they became worldwide sensations, they had to gain a fan base. They gained their
first fans from their homeland in the United Kingdom. The songs “Love Me Do” and “P.S. I
Love you” were their first UK singles. The Beatles returned to Hamburg for the last time. The
Beatles album would become the number one album in the UK within the first 10 hours it was
released.
The Beatles finally broke into the Billboard charts on February 1, 1964 with the song “I
Want to Hold Your Hand” which entered at number 45. Six days later they arrived at JFK airport
in New York to a legion of screaming fans; just a few months back the United States suffer the
loss of its beloved President John F. Kennedy. The night of February 9, the Beatles performed
for the largest television audience to date, 73 million people. Beatlemania had hit the States.
The Beatles would go on to create 13 albums and over 1.3 billion units sold by 2004. The
first album was Please, Please Me. This broke them into the world spotlight. It featured the
songs “Please, Please Me”, “Love Me Do”, “Do You Want to Know a Secret”, and “Twist and
Shout”. The album reached the top of the music charts and stayed there for 70 weeks.
With the Beatles, was the next album the “Fab Four” created. The song “All I‟ve Got to
Do” would influence “everyone from Abba to the Zombies”, according to Rolling Stone. Other
well known songs on this album included “Please Mister Postman”, “Roll Over Beethoven”, and
“I Wanna be Your Man”. The song “I Wanna be Your Man” included a cameo by the Rolling
Stones who would later cover the song.
Their next album actually turned into the movie for the Beatles, A Hard Day‟s Night.
The album expresses how the Beatles ever-growing fame began to take a toll on them. The first
track on the album is appropriately named the same as the album. “Can‟t Buy Me Love” also
became a big hit for the Beatles from this album.
“Beatles for Sale”, was the fourth album in less than two years for the Beatles. This
album showcased how the sound of the Beatles progressed and their song writing turned inward.
Bob Dylan was a large influence on the Beatles, and later in life Harrison and Dylan would enjoy
each other‟s company on a regular basis, sometimes playing tennis in jeans and cowboy boots.
The song “I‟m a Loser” on this album really highlights Dylan‟s influence. “Eight Days a Week”
was the largest hit from this album; McCartney got the name from a work weary chauffeur he
used.
“Help!” was another album that spawned a movie. Of course the album begins with the
iconic hit “Help!” The other big hit from this album was the song “Yesterday” which was
completely accredited to McCartney who considered releasing it as a solo single.
In the mid 60‟s the Beatles began to mature musically and mentally, the album Rubber
Soul gives listeners a sample of what they were feeling. The songs they sang before were about
love and peace, but now the songs reflect life lessons such as love fading in the song “I‟m
looking Through You”.
The Revolver album was a turning point in the Beatles‟ legacy. Hits like “Eleanor
Rigby”, “Yellow Submarine,” and “Doctor Robert” have a psychedelic feel that embodies the
experiences the Beatles had during this time. The track “Love You To” represents Harrison‟s
interest in Indian music as he begins incorporating it in the Beatles music.
The Album, Sgt. Pepper‟s Lonely Hearts Club Band, was a complete focus on itself
because the Beatles stopped touring. The revolutionary album offered splashes of psychedelic
colors and new sounds not used by the Beatles before. Hits from this album include “With a
Little Help From My Friends” and “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”. This album spent an
amazing 175 weeks on the music charts.
Maybe the most far out of all the Beatles albums is the Magical Mystery Tour. There
was also a movie for the album, but it was not well received. This album produced several hits
like “I Am the Walrus”, “Hello Goodbye”, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “Penny Lane”, and “All
You Need Is Love”.
The White Album was what the Rolling Stone called “…a songwriting binge for the
ages”. It was released in two parts; part 1 includes songs such as “Back in the U.S.S.R”, “Dear
Prudence”, and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” which Harrison wrote with the help of
acclaimed musician Eric Clapton. While Part 2 includes songs such as “Julia”, “Sexy Sadie”,
and “Helter Skelter” which was about an amusement-park ride and not Armageddon as many
presumed.
The Yellow Submarine album also served as a sound track for the cartoon, Yellow
Submarine. With just seven songs, the album included material from other albums like “All You
Need Is Love” along with new songs such as “All Together Now”, which was a call-and-
response between McCartney and Lennon that played out like a preschool sing-along.
Probably the most recognizable album cover and most imitated by fans is from the album
Abbey Road. The album had the great unity anthem “Come Together” and Harrison‟s
masterpiece “Here Comes the Sun”. The song “Here Comes the Sun” came out of a daydream
that Harrison had in Eric Clapton‟s garden.
The final album the Beatles recorded together was Let It Be. The creative differences of
the Beatles that made them what they were are what eventually lead to their breakup. Their last
album included songs such as “Let It Be”, “Maggie Mae”, “I Got a Feeling”, and “Across the
Universe”. “Maggie Mae” and “I Got a Feeling” have become cover favorites and “Across the
Universe” inspired a movie of the same name that featured a complete Beatles sound track.
Other famous Beatles songs that were released as singles include “From Me to You”,
“She Loves You”, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, “Day Tripper”, “Paperback Writer”, “Rain”,
“Lady Madonna”, “Hey Jude”, and “ The Ballad of John and Yoko”.
