Health Care Workshop Series May 5, 2019: Caring for the Caregiver: The Unsung Hero
Caring for a loved one can be rewarding as well as exhausting. Caregiving can take a toll physically, emotionally and financially. Taking care of yourself is one of the most important things you can do as a caregiver. If you are caring for a relative or friend, please come and learn how to also take care of yourself and your needs. Information on resources will be provided as well as tips on how to alleviate caregiver stress and burn-out.
Our caregiver Workshop presenter is Kelly Chiarella. Kelly currently serves as the Director for the Office for the Aging for the City
of Yonkers where she manages the department’s programs, services, budget and personnel. Kelly coordinates with different
organizations and community groups to communicate the many resources available to Yonkers senior residents. She has spear-
headed many initiatives to offer support for senior residents and caregivers on specific topics such as Alzheimer’s disease, Legal
Services, Managing Long Term Care, Housing and Hoarding. She also organizes the Mayor’s Health Fairs and this year organized a
Food Insecurity Summit, “Hungry for Change,” connecting all organizations providing food-related services to our low-income
residents. Kelly currently co-chairs the Healthy Yonkers Initiative, is the city-wide chairperson for Yonkers Relay for Life and an
active board member of the Yonkers Community Planning Council. She also sits on the Board for St. Vincent’s Maxwell Institute,
continuing to combat addiction issues in our community.
All workshops will be held in the school cafeteria at 1:00 pm
Refreshments will be served

My Dear Friends in Christ,
If you have driven down Shonnard Place in the last month, you may have noticed several work vans parked outside the
Church each day. Even if you have not, I would imagine you noticed the presence of the small Bobcat Bulldozer parked where the asphalt used to be on Convent Avenue. All of this work, of course, relates to the installation of a state of the
art air conditioning system for our church. What began as an idea nearly fifty years ago will become a reality within the next few weeks.
Under Fr. Moe’s leadership, you made your generosity manifest in the Renew + Rebuild Campaign. Shortly after the
beginning of the campaign, Sacred Heart received an anonymous $500,000 donation toward the project, reducing the
total cost to the parish to $275,000. This means that pledges that have been made by so many generous parishioners will not only result in air conditioning, but also in our ability to do the first work on our church hall in several
generations, allowing us to upgrade its kitchen, make it handicap accessible and to complete other severely needed technological and cosmetic projects.
In addition to providing needed respite from the summer’s heat, our new Air Conditioner will also be energy efficient.
An added benefit is that the main electrical system has been upgraded and brought up to code for the first time since the church was built over 100 years ago. And, in responding to what so many worried about: the installation of the AC
has done nothing to alter the incredible beauty of the Church… it has preserved it!
Within the next week, we plan to “push the button” on the system for a first test run. This will allow for any needed
troubleshooting well before the summer’s heat. As the weather continues to warm, we will also complete the new landscaping on the side of the Church, which includes new pavers and ornamental trees to conceal the AC units
adjacent to Convent Avenue.
As this project draws to its completion, I must offer a deep personal thanks to parishioner and General Contractor Paul Rafferty who has managed the project in detail from its beginning to end. I am also grateful for all of the work of the
many employees of Healy Electric, Integrated HVAC and Architectural Visions, as well as to Richard O’Neill who provided
special counsel throughout. Our Finance Council ensured the prudent fiscal management of this project. Our Parish Staff always made sure that our contractors had access to where they needed to go. Finally, and most importantly,
thank you, dear parishioners, for sharing both your treasure and your prayers in order to make sure this dream became a reality, thus improving our Church for generations to come.
With gratitude,
